BODY TYPE SERIES: THE LEGS

The legs --- a topic that is often discussed in the fashion world. It is usually discussed with regards to its' general size or length and how to dress it properly. However, I have reached an insight of another peculiar thing about our south border --- all of the articles are in general. It doesn't focus on the particular details about the legs. One of which is the varying length of thighs and calves. 


Before we start, let's see what type you are. Using your hand (left or right, it doesn't matter), place your thumb at the middle of the bikini line on top of your lap and gently gauge how long your thigh is by using your hand's length (Is it two hands? Also, be reminded that the thigh ends at the top of the knee area). Starting below the knee area, do the same thing. Take note which one is shorter or longer or if both of them are of the same length.

1. Long Thighs; Short Calves

This is actually my type of legs. My thighs are longer than my calves. Visually, you look shorter than the other types. As such, boots are not really much of your bestfriend. Choose any footwear with heels to elongate your legs further. 

Wear shorts that cut your thigh's length in half to balance the look with your calves.

2. Short Thighs; Long Calves

For this type, boots will look amazing on you. In fact, you can choose thigh high boots that ends at the middle of your thighs. This will definitely elongate your legs even more. 3/4 bottoms would look amazing on you as it creates a longer silhouette for your south border.

3. Long Thighs and Calves

For the really leggy curvies that wants to minimize it, I suggest wearing bottoms that end under the knee. This creates the illusion of a shorter thigh as it cuts you off at that state completely. Wear strappy sandals to also shorten your calves.

4. Short Thighs and Calves

For the curvies that wish to elongate, basically show them off and wear heels! The more exposure of the body type, the bigger people think it would be.

This Erzulliesta tweeted us her Erzulliefied photo (@erzullie). At first, she tweeted me for help on it, but judging by this photo, she is very good dressing up on her own!

I want to comment about her styling on why it's superb! First, her silhouette looks more balanced, which is one of the characteristics of an outfit. Next, the length of the skirt showcased her fabulous legs and it was just the right amount of "leg show". The skirt, cardigan and top all cinches down to the waist line, which makes her look much sleeker. The color is also not so dampening, as to make her look visually heavy, with the pop of the right color with the skirt and shoes.

Overall --- when I saw this... LOVE IT!

Azaza used a skirt from the 2010 Holiday collection, which is now RIF. (Rest in Fierceness)

Erzullie Icon for Resort 2012 search has ended last November. We have received 467 applicants in total and from that, I was able to interview 5 fabulous girls. From that, I have selected the final 3 for Resort 2012. We are yet to decide how many Icons we are getting for this season, as it is usually based on the project at hand.

So presenting the final three:

She won us with her professionalism and ability to defend herself from naysayers.

She won us with her demure smile and ability to whip up different styles given a few pieces!!!

TIPS TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLOTHING SIZE

As plus size stylists, we have been blessed to have the opportunity to dress up a lot of awesome curvies! Usually, for the first timers, they usually have set their minds on a specific size that is them and usually, when they find out that they are bigger/smaller in size range for that specific type of clothing, I immediately see the sadness set in.

However, I am usually there to tell them the INVISIBLE TRUTH. (Invisible because it's actually a common truth, but it's still ignored.) The invisible truth is, SIZE LABELS DO NOT REALLY MATTER. Whether or not there is a standard, chances are there will be times that you are supposed to wear something smaller for this type of clothing and bigger for the other one. It is not because you have lost weight or gained (respectively) but because each clothing is OBVIOUSLY NOT THE SAME. 

Ultimately each clothing differs in cloth used and style, which defines what your body will need (in terms of size) in order to look fab.

There are cloths that are stretchable like jersey and spandex (which splits up to different branches). In this case, more often than not, you will need a smaller size.

But how small? You need a smaller size when:

1. For bottoms: you can fit your whole palm inside, even while you are wearing the bottom already. Straighten up your palm like you are going to chop a brick and then place it inside your bottom. If you can wiggle your palm inside with ease, then you need a smaller size.


2. For tops: this is tricky as there are tops that are meant to be lose. For the otherwise, if the top is folding all over, then most probably you should have a smaller size.

On the other side of the spectrum there is organza and satin (in general, although there are stretch satin). With this one, it gets tricky, but usually, a bigger size would be optimal just as long as you can breathe in it.

But how big should you be selecting? That's the question. You need a bigger size when you put it on and:

1. the seams on the sides are stretching to the point that you can see the threads stretched already.

2. the print of the clothing is disfigured already (not unless it is crazy printed)


3. if it is garterized and it is stretched to the limit of its elasticity. (To be sure, try to stretch the garter, it is supposed to leave a little more room for breathing of at least a two fingers, middle and index.)

4. You look lumpy. As plus size women, our curves will at times fold. If this is showing through the shape of the clothing, then get a bigger size.

So I hope that this helps you find out the right fit for your body.

BODY TYPE SERIES: TAMING YOUR TEMPTING THIGHS, WHILE SHOWING THEM

A lot of my clients, being plus size women, have big thighs. But how big is big? Honestly, if you think you have big thighs, someone will always have bigger, and although you may have bigger than others, there is absolutely NO STANDARD that will tell you when your thighs are considered big. If this is our premise, you will always end up somewhere in the middle.

(Come on... you are not the only woman in the planet! @_@ There are even undiscovered life forms out there, that I may think have thighs!)

However, you can determine it, but not against comparing it to others, but to the rest of your body parts.

So get a full body mirror and look at it and see it with all honesty. Are your thighs the biggest part of your body? If it is not, then it's not. Leave it at that.

Now if you are one of the ladies that has been blessed with curvy Rhiannas (thighs) then read on! This will definitely help you! ^^

What you are really scared of...Now, I am not saying that just because you do not want to show your Rhiannas you are not confident. I have recently learned that from one of my FB encounters. There may be times that you just don't like to show your thighs because it's not your style. I can dig that.

However, for the ladies that do want to show some skin, but is afraid to do so... I just want to offer a piece of love note to you... Handling a lot of plus size clients, I think what you are ultimately afraid of is not the size of your thighs per se but 2 things:

1. your cellulite showing

2. how unproportional your body is because of your thighs

Fear not, however! There are ways that you can actually wear something short and work with your unique features (cellulite and Rhianna proportions).

You just have to choose the right length, style and color.

The length should just be enough to cover the areas that you want to hide.

The style should be the one that amps up the volume on your hips and contours your thighs.

The color should be in the dark side to help you minimize it.

Let's apply this to Erzullie Icon, Marian Beltran.

The Skirt

Marian actually has big thighs. Although she is a box shape (her shoulders, boobs, tummy, hips and thighs are all of the same proportions), it is undeniable that she is curvy and of course, like all women (even me), have cellulite. However check out this photo of her, sporting a short skirt.

P.S. This photo was not majorly edited. I only changed the background to white and added the words on it, other than that... nada. I don't edit my Icon's body or face. I want to show that we really don't need photoshop to look amazeballs. We just have to believe we do look hot.

How come it looks so good on her? You may ask?

1. The skirt was the right length. It was not too short to the point that her cellulites would be showing.

2. The skirt was the right shape. The shape of the skirt was a half coconut. (big opening at the bottom of the skirt but not bigger than the garter of it) This shape of the skirt created fuller hips and thus, making the thighs look smaller.

3. The skirt was of the right color. Although it is the color purple, it is still on the dark side. Thus, the minimizing effect and less attention.

The Shorts

THE ICONIC BRA PHOTO

I know that I have been showing this photo a lot but it's a great example. You can actually see the minimization of the hips and thighs area. Let's apply the theory:

1. The length of the shorts. Again, just right to cover the problem areas


2. Shape of the shorts. It's again half coconut. It has detailing on the hips area, which adds a little more volume. The style of the shorts actually curves the thighs both taming them and curving them nicely.

3. Color of the shorts. Yes, it's in dark color. Thus, minimizing that area.

Do it for yourself!


So to apply this to yourself, should you want to shop for skirts and shorts that is above your knees in length. Try them on and look at yourself. Remember LSC! (Length-Shape-Color).
