PLUS SIZE OPINION: DREAMS AND DESPERATION

I read a tweet recently, it said, “@___ notice me! please make me a model, if not, I’m going to kill myself.” To be honest, it’s not my first time to see these kinds of comments, but it got me to thinking about dreams and desperation.

Dreams are what motivates us to wake up every day (at least for me). It’s fascinating for me that at any time our lives could end, but why not today? There must be a reason right? And for now, before we go deep, at least we have dreams to keep us occupied until we reach our end.

But what if it’s not working? What if we have tried everything and still we haven’t achieved it? Does it mean we picked the wrong one or we simply just have to try harder? And how hard is harder? What if we have given it all that we got and yet we are still left with nothing?

It’s a sad thought. I know. But I am pretty sure that everyone has already experienced this at one moment of their lives --- that is the part where desperation occurs. We start to bargain our own dignity or value just to get what we want and that’s just plain dangerous.

Think about it --- your whole being just for one moment in your life that may or may not work out for you after all, but that is what dreams are for I guess. It’s the one moment in your whole life that you felt that you were born for something and not some random events that occurred in the universe --- because we all want to feel like we are born for something.

So in the end, I am not sure. Are dreams, really worth the desperation?

PLUS SIZE OPINION: THE (TIRING) FASHION SIZE LABEL DEBATE

There is a great fashion size label debate going on out there. Some women are having problems with regular size women claiming they are plus and vice versa. Then there is a third faction who says, “just chuck the label and wear it”. It all gets confusing but for me, when it comes to fashion and style, I am with the third faction.

I mean, what’s wrong with being called plus size or calling yourself as one? If some women feel that they are more connected to the plight of plus size women or fashion, then who are we to stop them? Same goes to the women who call themselves regular size.

I actually learned this the hard way. In a bazaar, when a regular size woman would approach our booth. I would immediately notify them that we are a plus size store, gently “shooing them away”.

Now mind you, the reason that I was doing this is because before, a regular size customer came in, fell in love, grabbed everything and then when she found out it was a plus size fashion line she threw the clothes at me and left the store angry --- because she is not plus size and she felt that she was ‘led on’.

Since then, I make it a point that I notify the regular size customers about it. But then, one day, a regular size woman told me that she was offended with what I have said. “Your fashion line is meant to liberate women of different sizes. Why are you not allowing me inside your store?”

I went to defensive mode at first. In my mind, I was like, so if a fat girl enters a regular size store and gets turned away because nothing would fit her --- it’s not discrimination but when a small girl goes to a big girl shop and we tell them nothing fits --- it is?

But in the end, she is right. Erzullie was made to make any fierce plus size woman feel great about herself. And if this woman is celebrating her inner plus size woman (which we all have), then who am I to stop her?

From then on, if a regular size girl comes in, I just treat her just like any other Erzulliesta. Believe it or not, Erzulliestas have now come in different shapes and size indeed. So what’s in a name? Nothing. The affinity to it differs from one person to another, so respecting that person’s notion would be the better approach or else, this debate is never going to end.

Cheers!

Aries

PLUS SIZE OPINION: ONE LOVE FOR PLUS SIZE EMPOWERMENT

In the plus size world, there are many messages being brought, but I do believe that they all say the same thing --- we are all beautiful and we deserve respect just like anyone else.

But of course, there will be times that we will find someone whom we cannot agree with. For me, the right way to go about it is to just respect the person’s views, while stating your own. It doesn’t even need to contradict. You just have to talk about it or opt  not to respond and find others that share your own views, instead.

Because isn’t this what the plus size advocacy is all about? We, plus size women, want to be heard as a viable part of society. In order to heard, we need to talk  about it or at least have someone do. Silencing another person is counterproductive. Because once the talk dies, that’s the end of the cause --- we are no longer heard.

So instead of stopping someone from doing what they think is right for the cause, respect it. Respect is about knowing the right time, words and actions to show your views about the matter and conveying them in the most thoughtful way possible. This way, we keep the conversation going.

We are all doing our best for the cause, ladies --- believe me. There are different lines of thoughts but we all have the goal of empowering plus size women in mind. So let’s just talk about our ideas instead and remind ourselves that in the end, we all have one love towards plus size empowerment.

Cheers!

Aries

PLUS SIZE FASHION: A SUGGESTED 2014 FASHION AND STYLE RESOLUTIONS

As the year 2014 opens, the opportunity of improving our fashion and style is yet upon us. Let’s cease this opportunity and embrace new positive fierce plus size fashion habits! (You may also want to read our 2013 resolutions --- still have some good wisdom there.)

#1 I will only buy the best.

If we think about it, a high quality, Php 1,500 garment (approx. $35) that we buy once a year and use it all year round (even more) in different styling is a better investment than buying 10 pcs. of poor quality Php 250.00 (total Php 2,500 approx. $58) because it is easily ripped or discolored.

#2 As much as possible, I will buy from the local plus size fashion scene.

2013 showed me a lot of new and exciting local plus size brands and the creativity is outstanding! This year, I aim to wear more local plus size fashion brands as much as possible. I think it will be good to rejuvenate my style.

#3 I will curate my closet better.

Curating your closet will help you define your style, make your personality more concrete, save you money from buying things you will never use and maximize all of your garments! If that is not fashion & style utopia, I don’t know what is!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: MY 2013 “TAKE AND LEAVE” LIST

It’s the end of the year and with an avalanche of “resolutions post”, which shamefully, I will be doing later on, I was thinking about my last and only goodbye to 2013.

So what are the things that I want to leave here in 2013?

#1 The constant self-pity. It’s such an irony that I am promoting “fierceness” when in myself I do not feel or even practice it. But good to note, I am correcting it now.

#2 People that waste my hope. I love seeing the goodness of people, but sometimes when a person does not choose it--- ever, hoping for it is tiring. I’d rather channel my hope to people who uses it to remember their goodness.

#3 Gossip. It’s unreliable and I’d rather be a confidant of someone’s secret than someone telling me about someone’s secrets. It’s more deep and fulfilling.

With that goodbye, what do I take with me?

#1 Good and worthy relationships. I have made so much meaningful connections this year that helped me grow. I will take this with me and nourish it more.

#2 New found skills and solutions. Gone are the days that I feel insecure about my abilities with regards to how to handle Erzullie. I will take this with me and improve them.

#3 The ability to not use social media so much. This year, I was able to train myself to minimize my need to use it personally. I find it liberating and the connections, more meaningful.

So how about you? What are you leaving and taking this 2013?

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: “LUCKY YOU”

“I’m so lucky!” How many times have you said that yourself and your life? Do you take time to feel and realize how blessed your life is, despite its ups and downs, or you just focus on how it could have been better?

It’s the end of the year. In retrospect, I have realized how lucky I was this year and how ignorant I was about it. This year, I was well fed, safe, with a roof on my head, money to spend on coffee and night-outs, privilege to keep a passionate business open, connect with people, blog constantly and freely and above all --- just plain healthy and alive. There were so many moments that I should be so grateful there and then but as I reflect upon my past, I have focused on how it could have gone better instead.

Because that is my mentality back then, I strove harder. With that, every time I do not hit my version of “better”, I became more bitter. More bitterness made me feel even more unlucky about my life so, I work harder to get it. It's a vicious cycle.

What do I end up with? A conclusion that I have a very “unlucky” life --- or so I thought --- at that point.

But now that I have survived yet another year, in retrospect, my life was not that unlucky as I thought it was. In fact, it was because of my ignorance of how lucky I was that made it awful.

So wake up to the fact that you are lucky. You have achieved so much and you have more blessings than you thought you actually deserve. You may have even been receiving awesome stuff you never asked!

Lucky you, indeed!

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: DID YOU SLOW DOWN TODAY?

We can easily get lost with everything in our lives --- love, money, goals, ambitions and we would like to keep up with everything flawlessly to show to everyone how strong we are. We resist to be unmasked for who we are --- human beings who need to connect, not only to the people around us but to what is actually happening to us.

So the question is, did you slow down today?

I sometimes find myself going about my day. Just doing one thing after another and sometimes several things at once and then at the end of the day, if I ask myself, “what happened?” I can barely recall.

To be honest, at first, I didn’t mind. But one day, as I was blogging for Erzullie, I just realized that it was already 9 am (I start at 5 am). The rays of the sun were beautiful and there I was ignoring it as I type away in my laptop.

I have wondered at that moment, how much of my life have passed by already? I am so caught up with “keeping up” with everything that ironically, I only kept up with the tasks, but not with my actual life.

I miss knowing that I can breathe, that I have my health, that life is not in the work that I do but the moment that I actually felt it. I was too busy catching my dreams, I forgot to wake up from time to time to realize, how amazing reality was.

In search of true beauty and a good life, I have realized that I have ignored it. It was in front of me all along and all it takes is us to stop, take time and slow down.

Hugs, Erzulliestas. Live every time. Waste it not.

Cheers!

Aries

PLUS SIZE OPINION: THE POSITIVE SIDE OF ANGER

We always think of being angry as a bad thing, but little do we know that being angry can actually be empowering. But of course it depends on your choice --- will you use this emotion negatively or positively?

The negative kind is the one wherein you use anger to get back at that person (a.k.a. revenge) and forever forge him/her into your life story (even giving this person the award for the person that affected you the most --- yuck! Isn’t it?) Revenge, mind you, will eat tremendous amounts of your precious time, energy and effort. And personally, if this person already took and wasted some of those from your life, why give the person the luxury of having a second helping of it?

Stop making his/her character stay longer in your life through plotting, implementing and relishing in your revenge. You could be just moving on to better things, embracing better experiences and letting new amazing people in, which lead us to the positive kind of angry.

This kind is the one where you acknowledge that what this person did to you is wrong and because you are angry about it, you just cut him/her from your life, giving yourself freedom from the person, the situation and even the aftermath of it. In this sense, you have used anger to propel yourself to a new beginning. You have finally declared that he or she no longer has power over you and your life. This will immediately set you free and give you more room for a better situation.

So feel free to use anger to make yourself and your life better, which is if you ask me, the better kind of revenge.
