PLUS SIZE DESIGNER: TAKE & LEAVE LIST 2014

Last year, I made this “Take & Leave” List for 2013. Now it’s that time of the year again where I reflect on this year.

So what am I taking from the year 2014 to 2015?

#1 The belief in the fact that I can put up, manage and grow a store --- easily, with all the drama that comes with it. The wisdom there? It’s not always as bad as you think it is. Probably the reason that you think it is THAT bad is because you are tired.

#2 Crying is good thing. Sometimes, you just really need to let it all out. The only time that you are weak is the time that you give up.

#3 The wisdom that comes with my age. Sure. To be young again seems appealing, but I feel that as I turn another year of my life over, I feel that I am so much better now than I was before. I am now more focused and I feel like I know now how to commit to a direction that I wanted to take. I never want to come back to the old me --- EVER.

With that in mind, I am leaving the following:

#1 The Villa Sole showroom --- we are off to better things. Thank you for the service.

#2 Fickle friends. I am too old waiting around for someone to make up their mind about who they are and what they stand for. I love women who are solid about their ambitions and will do the right thing to get there (no users).

#3 My bad kind of pride. Sometimes, you just have to give up the things that you think you don’t want, for the things that are actually better for you. Just because you didn’t get what you planned for, it doesn’t mean you were a failure. That failure was needed to direct you towards the right path all along. And although it hurts, you really just have to embrace it for everyone’s betterment.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE POWER: LOU RETIRO | “EMBRACING EMPOWERMENT”

Erzulliesta Lou Retiro started out as an online fan and when she saw that Erzullie was hosting an open plus size model shoot, she immediately took the chance. What she thought was going to be a brief encounter, became a life-changing moment. Check out her journey towards plus size empowerment.

#1 First off, introduce yourself, Erzulliesta and what’s your journey as a plus size woman?

I am Lou Retiro, 24 years of age, a business analyst for a global company.

In my elementary days, I always join beauty contests and activities until I got chubby. Since then, I had low self-esteem. My family would convince me to lose weight since all my four elder sisters are slim. I have tried it, but then I keep on failing which added a lot of frustration for myself.

Soon, I have read articles on plus sizes and love your body campaigns through media. This opened my eyes that we should not fall for the idea that we should all have the same size, face and body. People around you will accept you once you have learned to accept yourself.

This is true for me, I am confident to tell to everyone that I am a plus size woman now, take it or leave it. I want to be an example of self acceptance and self appreciation.

#2 So how did you end up joining Erzullie’s Plus Size Model open shoot?

It was 2012 when I have searched online for brands in the Philippines that caters to plus size women. I remember they just had closed their search for Erzullie Icon that time. After that, I constantly followed it on Facebook, since I also have friends who like the brand. I felt that this brand is really for me. It has style and class that suits my age and personality.

When I saw them open a plus size model shoot to the public, I applied immediately and got in. It was one of the best hours of my life! I am really thankful to Erzullie for giving me an opportunity to learn how to model and be groomed professionally. I couldn't believe the transformation from head to toe.

#3 Speaking of transformation, how did the experience change you?

I now firmly believe that I am beautiful with my curves! It is just a matter of wearing the right undergarments and clothes to emphasize it. I learned to spice up my everyday life with Erzullie, embracing my curves, trying more make-up, accessories, confidence and most of all wearing a fierce attitude. Also Erzullie made me feel relaxed about my size. I don't have to worry anymore if it will fit on some clothes because I know, they have it here for me.

#4 Any messages for the Erzulliestas out there?

By definition, Fierce is being strong and showing a powerful intensity. These are the words that we should always remember. We have exceptional quality in our own way. This should become our mindset. Get up, dress up and show up!

PLUS SIZE POWER: “FAITH OVER FEAR”

Everything you do in life will always have a chance of succeeding/failing. What ultimately makes the difference is your faith in yourself that you can survive the consequences of your choice whether or not it does. So, “faith over fear” all the time. A choice is better than none at all because the answer to a decision not made will always be “no”.

PLUS SIZE MODEL: CAROL PERLA-CERVANTES | STYLE AFTER SINGLE

Style evolves as our life does but is it true that style turns sloppy (or even secondary) once you become married? Erzulliesta Carol Perla-Cervantes reports back, as she embraces the married life and a whole new outlook about herself and her wardrobe.

#1 Let’s jump to it. How did you meet your husband and how is family life so far?

I met my husband at work. I thought he was a kleptomaniac at first --he was starting too much on my iPhone. I pocketed it, but we both knew the awkward silence meant that I was accusing him of being a thief (haha).

I used to just let life happen -- I was easy-go-lucky and very laid back. I make time to do other things or constantly find new things to do. I didn't sleep a lot, I partied way too much!

Nowadays I'm trying to stretch my time for the kids. Also, I always have to consider my partner's take on most of my decisions --be it a small or a big one. And when you're single and you go missing for 12 hours it doesn't generate a manhunt.

#2 With that in mind, did it affect your personal style as an Erzulliesta?

Before I was married, I was always obsessed with the gypsy/bohemian styles. I wore bandanas, hoop earrings, the works. But really I wore just about anything. Although my style varies almost every day I believe my style is mostly "loud and proud" to be plus size. I love bold prints and colors. Probably the reason I never wear gray! Ha ha ha!

Now that I am married, more or less I've toned down a bit. I don't wear super plunge necklines a lot anymore since bending over would be too much work in keeping my ta-tas exposure-free haha! I don't wear bandanas and rose cabbage accents on my neck and I still love colors. I wear gray now -- just gray pants. I feel like my style is kind of Kate Winslet's. She always goes for the bold colors you know? She rarely wears gray on the red carpet!

#3 There is now a cultural obsession for the “hot mama” status. Thoughts?

Do not succumb to the “instant hot mama” pressure. Since I gave birth I've been at least 30 pounds heavier, and it doesn't mean I just let myself go. I exercise and eat healthier --more than I did 10 years ago. It took time to develop your baby. Your body needs to rest up a bit too after birth.

Relax. Being "hot" isn't everything. If your husband loves you dearly, he will think you're not only hot, but you're a goddamn rock star for carrying that baby for 9 months!

For me, I think I like looking a certain way. If it inevitably gears toward "hot momma" territory, who cares? I like making an effort to look my best, and it boosts my happy hormones like crazy

#4 Do you think that there is such a thing as “mom style”?

This is tricky. I think there is -- and usually it means that it's not a very flattering/fashionable style! What comes to mind are dowdy clothes and no makeup and ... looking very homely. I feel it's unfair that moms get that kind of stereotype. Choosing comfort over style isn't solely reserved for parents!

But then again you see Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, they're moms -much older moms and they still wear sexy little things! I don't think there should be a limitation to what moms wear. Although I think moms should be more careful in choosing clothes and consider first the kind of occasion they're going to and if they have their kids with them.

#5 So how do you keep your personal style still intact in this new phase of your life?

I keep up by browsing Instagram, and anything else the Internet or magazines can offer. I'm an avid reader of anything that comes my way --from utility bills to prescriptions and magazines and really wonderful novels like Harry Potter. Just reading, and browsing. Oh, this trove of information straight to my phone!

#6 Parting words about being a stylish mom?

I think the greatest challenge in being one is to encourage other moms to do the same. It doesn't take a lot to be comfortable with a certain style, or find a style that suits you best. Start with the current pieces that you have and try to mix and match.

Being a stylish mom also creates a positive energy for me. I don't want life to just pass me by. I want to see my kids grow up, see my friends, go to work, pursue my hobbies and grow old with my husband. And what's wrong with having a family life while wearing a leopard print dress and red stilettos with a glass of bubbly in one hand right?

PLUS SIZE DESIGNER: THE 'BURN OUT' CURE

Yesterday it was so hard to blog. Honestly. I guess inspiration sometimes runs out, huh? So what did I do to snap out of it? I played. I played the whole day.

I knew I had responsibilities and I really felt disappointed with myself that I was not able to take care of it. But then again, I am really dried up in the brain. It’s actually a great problem. It’s because of all of the opportunities that came all of a sudden. We needed to pay attention to all of it and well, here I am --- dried brain zone.

But hey, here I am. Back to blogging. So what’s new?

Aside from our gratitude for all of the Erzulliestas that set an appointment this December with us, well, we are currently working on our Resort 2015. Hopefully we finish all of it by February 2015 so that we can have an early private event for it.

That’s all for now.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE DESIGNER: IT’S DECEMBER!

Whew! We just finished Erzullie’s Anniversary month and would like to thank all of the Erzulliestas that made it possible. It was a very successful month full of events and we just can’t get enough of it.

Now, I just realized this morning that --- OMG it’s December! It seems like January was just yesterday, or something. I know it may sound like I am exaggerating things but, I am just here wondering --- where did time go?

Most importantly, did I use it well?

I know that this year was a little rough as we start to perfect our production and correct our fashion clock. We finally did, with the Corporate 2015 collection exclusively released last November. We are currently doing the Resort 2015. We are re-doing it as I, personally, did not find it excellent enough for the Erzulliestas. Here is to hoping that the second collection would be better.

As we are about to face 2015, I am bracing myself as we are going for the next step for Erzullie as a business. It’s now time for the marketing department to have a makeover. Hopefully, we do things right for Erzullie’s 5th year in operation. (I know I have just celebrated the 4th year this year, but hey, I like thinking about the future.)

Anyway, that’s basically it. It’s been a while since I have popped my head here and share some thoughts. Hope you girls have an awesome day!

Cheers!
