PLUS SIZE MODEL: KAT LOPEZ, RAISING THE CURVE

The curve has been raised for the local plus size scene. Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Kat Lopez, is about to rock our world with her music and modeling prowess. Her thoughts as her career elevates? She shares.

#1 You’re back in the roster of Erzullie Icons for 2014! How does it feel?

I feel more like I am part of a family now. And I never feel like a veteran (if being a veteran means being "more experienced") I am learning a lot from the other models.

To add, I am now even more comfortable in my own skin. This time around I have more meaningful relationships with the people in the industry and this is inspiring.

#2 New Erzullie Icons came in, any thoughts in that?

I love Monica's sass. She projects so fiercely in amazingly different ways. I hope that she enjoys the ride! The chance and ability to model is a gift. Use profusely!

I love the changes that they brought! More friends, more challenges are always good!  Shoot sessions are also becoming more frequent, which gives us models the chance to hone both our skills and strengthen our bonds. We end up seeing each other more and feel more inspired and empowered because of this.

#3 Let’s go to the other side, how is your music career?

I'm happily enjoying THAT ride as well. So far I’ve been so blessed to know people in the indie scene that make me grow as an artist.

I met Knowa and Flave (the boys of QYork) at a songwriting camp a few years back. We found we have good chemistry in songwriting and we've been doing projects since. They are exactly like the ERZULLIE designers... they have both honed my technical skills and nourished my artistry.

#4 So how do you handle both careers?

Like I said, life is too short to avoid challenges. I'd choose meaning over comfort anytime, especially when it comes to music and modeling.

I just have to force myself to be disciplined with my time. In one day I have to do something for my artistic pursuits and my day job as well. All these demands from these different paths have to be woven carefully into the week's schedule.

#5 Any future plans/hopes for your plus size modeling career?

I want to do runway so badly! I want to model gowns! I want to continue modeling for fabulous game-changing clothes like those of ERZULLIE!

I also will be coming out with a new single soon. I am currently on tour with Jay-R's Homeworkz Label and Q-York's Edutainment brand. I am enjoying what is happening to my music right now and am continuing the surf this wave of opportunity.

PLUS SIZE TIP: 3 REASONS WHY YOU MAY BE FEELING WORTHLESS

So you got everything and you are thankful, but how come you feel like nothing? Here are some reasons:

#1 You are exhausted.

It’s a common “independent woman syndrome”. We work too hard to get what we want and need, to the point that we forget that we also get tired. Even if you are passionate with what you do, just remember that that passion is housed in a body that gets tired and stressed too. So be kind. Take time.

The way to deal with it? TAKE A VACATION. A long one. If you have been stuck in a routine for quite some time, do one last thing that any independent woman would do --- rescue yourself and take yourself to that beautiful sunset of self-care.

#2 You feel unappreciated by others

Women can be hyper-provider at times. The worst? Not to ourselves but others. We love rescuing others more than ourselves and although it’s a noble thing, it doesn’t help for anyone to at least recognize that effort now, right?

Be at peace. It’s not a bad thing to want a little appreciation. In fact, it’s just a longing for us to know if we are still doing the right thing. After all, what if these people never wanted that attention from us? Wouldn’t it also be easier for them to tell us so that we can stop and make them feel comfortable again?

So what do you do? One, cut these people off. It’s harsh. We know. But these people are called emotional vampires and goodness knows that your whole life has a lot of it. Focus on the people that actually do appreciate you. Your life will be so much richer.

Next, maybe demand a little appreciation. It’s really okay. Just tell people that you want to be appreciated. You will be surprised how others will rush in to make you feel that.

#3 You have postponed self-growth for other people.

Change is the only permanent thing in this world. As dramatic as that may sound, it is true. Sometimes we feel that we need to change and grow, but the only thing that is stopping us is the ones that we love. We fear that with this change, some of them might stay, while others leave.

Even though this is true, it’s actually a great thing for you. A true friend/lover is the one that loves you for all of you. If they know that this change is for the best, then they will understand. So if you changed for the better and these people leave --- good riddance! You get to keep those that are really true until the end.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE TIP: 3 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOUR FAMILY BULLIES YOU FOR YOUR BODY

It’s enough that strangers whom you just met share their opinion about your body, but to go home to a bunch of people that you are stuck with for life and hear the same thing over and over again , now that’s torture.

I was actually blessed enough to have a family that accepts and understands the uniqueness of everyone. But for the Erzulliestas who are struggling, here are 3 things to do when your family bullies you for your body, in any way. If you also got a story on how you got over yours, please do share.

Again, results may vary with regards to these things. But these are my usual go-to social protocol when it comes to body topics.

#1 Tell them that you are actually getting hurt

Most of the time, they may not just know as they may think “it’s just a joke” or “they are just concerned for your health” which are both noble thoughts. However, if you feel otherwise, just politely thank them for their concern and tell them that you feel offended or uncomfortable about the topic. If they keep on going, just politely leave the table. (No need to debate with them, their mind is set!)

#2 Make them talk about how beautiful they are

It’s a simple throw away really. At times, I have a relative that would tell me how I should lose weight and “look beautiful”, I tell them, “Thank you. I am already beautiful as I am, just like you. You look gorgeous! What did you do?” Then I get them to talk about their own beauty regimen and their wonderful journey to confidence.

Most of the time, they would say, “No. I’m not” and I start telling them that they are crazy for saying that because I see a hottie. Afterwards, I just leave them with empowering words. Everybody wins.

#3 End their sentences in a positive note for them.

This trick, I have learned to perfect over time. There is this plus size neighbor of mine who literally greets everyone (thin or not) with “oh my gosh (insert name here) you have gained a lot of weight!” A lot of people get offended by this, but for me, I just take it as her natural nature and end her sentence with, “Yes, Miss. I did! And I feel gorgeous! Look at all the boobs and butt that I got. Some people actually pay doctors to have these. I got it for free!”After that, she never greeted me like that again.

You have seen the black and white version, now how about some burst of color? This Yellow-Gray Erzullie Resort 2014 Penguin Top is a great way to embrace the fun and fierce of summer styles. Check out the 3 ways to wear it!

#1 Casual Colors

#2 Light & Day

BUY THE ERZULLIE RESORT 2014 PENGUIN TOP
BUY THE HOLIDAY 2011 BERMUDA PANTS

Go for flow contrasts in lieu of texture. The Erzullie Resort 2014 Penguin top is, in a way a loose top but the fabric is more of a constructive type. Pair it with something loose and flowy like the Erzullie Resort 2012 Basic Maxi pants. This will create both comfort and sway in your style.

#3 The Ultra Fashionista

BUY THE ERZULLIE RESORT 2014 PENGUIN TOP
BUY ERZULLIE SKIRTS

Something that we think, Erzulliestas, will definitely be delighted with. Go all out with the colors and ground it all up with a solid pencil skirt. In this case, we paired the Erzullie Resort 2014 Penguin Top with the Holiday 2011 girdle skirt.

Cheers!
