PLUS SIZE FASHION: (DESIGNER’S THOUGHTS) BEFORE WE TAKE THE VACATION

Next month (November) is Erzullie’s anniversary month and before we take a vacation from October 30 – November 4, 2013 (be back online November 5), here is our little love note.

Wow. 2 more days and then Erzullie’s anniversary month is about to happen. We (literally, Erzulliestas and the brand, Erzullie) are about to celebrate our 3 years anniversary of being together.

I know. It sounds like we are in a relationship. To be honest, I have always viewed this brand as so. It's because of that relationship that the brand has lasted so long and with that, we are eternally grateful.

Thank you, Erzulliestas for giving us the privilege of serving you girls the fiercest plus size fashion in the Philippines.

Furthermore, the annual Erzullie anniversary photos are about to come out. I am actually excited because I think that the theme of this has really encapsulated the brand’s journey this year. It’s all about leveling up and this year, I am proud to say that with your continued business we did.

To add more excitement, the Holiday 2013 diamond collection is also about to come out online next month. We are so happy of our work! Here is to hoping that you girls would love it too.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: 3 FASHION TRENDS THAT SHOULD COME BACK

Styles become trends because it has refreshed the fashion polis’ palette from the usual and so here are the 3 fashion trends that we think should come back!

#1 Color blocking (In General)

To be honest, I really miss this trend, whether it’s neon, pastel, black and white, neutral. But feelings aside, this trend stylishly infected and addicted many women and men mainly because of the color and freedom it gives.

Using colors, you can play with your proportions, add color to your ensemble and look lively! And in a world where pressures abound, there is a need for us to add a dash of creativity to induce happiness.

#2 Pastel Colors

Okay this, maybe not yet. We are yet to bury that trend deep down in our minds to be in the mood for this ice cream color delight. But I do remember this trend being so deliciously feminine that every woman wanted to sport one.

I do think that this should come back but maybe waaay into the future. I love how these colors bring out a modernized, sophisticated female in each woman.

#3 That long khaki denim skirt

Remember those long khaki denim skirts that dominated the 90’s? I wanted to have those when I was young but I didn’t have the money. Lol. Anyway, it was floor length, usually straight cut or pencil with slits (double or single).

If there is one big denim garment that ever made a woman look casually chic, that thing is it! I remember it being worn with light long sleeve tops and that fisherman hat with the front folded up with a sunflower on it. Lol. The 90’s was such a carefree thing.

How about you, Erzulliestas? What fashion trend would you like to come back?

PLUS SIZE FASHION: ERZULLIE HOLIDAY 2013 BTS PHOTOS

Last October 26, we had a photo shoot of the Holiday 2013 collection. It’s special not only because this is the last collection of the year, but also because it’s the first shoot that we have ever done in our design studio.

Just seeing this happen where all the clothes are made and designed just gives us the happiness that Erzullie has a long future ahead of her. Through this, we feel that we are given more time to have the privilege to serve our fierce plus size sisters.

But emotions aside, if you ladies can’t get enough of the BTS photos we posted on our instagram, twitter, facebook and tumblr accounts, here are some more!

We would like to thank Mr. Mark Alvarez for the raw photos of the collection! I would also like to thank Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Loren Monares, for being the lovely professional that she is.

Cheers!

It’s amazing how an Erzulliesta handles all challenges with such poise and grace! There is no doubt that an Erzulliesta is a go-getter and it can be difficult at times. PLUS SIZE POWER: PINAY CURVIES, WHY THEY DO WHAT THEY DO WITH OR WITHOUT RECOGNITION

A couple of Erzulliestas is shaking the local plus size scene --- Mitch Cagadas and Lornadahl Campilan, the girls behind Pinay Curvies, have been holding local events aiming to empower plus size women. We sat down with them for a little chat about what motivates them to keep on doing what they do and why go through all the trouble in doing so.

Presently, you are the only blog that actively focuses on local plus size events. Was that the original plan?

Lorna :  I'm under the impression that The Curvy Lifestyle did the same thing before us. It was our vision to make it a smaller world for plus size Pinays. We hope to hold more events that tackle wellness and nutrition, getaway and Philippine Fatshion Week!

Mitch : It was clear that it will be a community centered movement for Filipino women. I'd like to see Pinay Curvies as a well-rounded plus size community.

Where do you get ideas with regards to your events and what motivates you to do them?

Lorna: I got the "swap meet" idea from the plus size community in the US. I was like, "We should have our own gatherings, too!"

I feel motivated because of the fat jokes and oppressive treatment of fat people. I get reminded that we can't fail. It's very rewarding to serve other people.

Mitch : The majority of our inspirations came overseas. Hearing appreciative feedback from curvy women definitely inspires us to do better. Meeting new friends that share the same interests and opinions in life that we find truly rewarding.

What was the most memorable event and how do you girls manage it?

Lorna : I love the Swap Meet & Greet because plus size brands supported us even if we're just newbies and everybody went home happy.

Finding the venue is always the most challenging part. I guess being focused helped us to overcome it.

We both handle our social media presence, but I admit I'm more hands-on about that. Mitch does the graphic design. This is easy because Pinay Curvies is our escape from stress.

Mitch : Swap Meet & Greet, it was our very first event so I'm always sentimental about it.

Money is a challenge but God has proven his miracles.

All praise to Lorna for being socially active. I mostly do technical web stuffs, answering fashion woes and going through every detail prior hosting the actual event. I think it is the sense of professionalism that helped us overcome the challenges. I'm also blessed to have a husband who supports and understand my interests outside our relationship.

PLUS SIZE EVENT: (DESIGNER’S THOUGHTS) HOLIDAY 2013 PHOTO SHOOT TOMORROW!

Well, what can we say about the photo shoot tomorrow?

First, this would be one of the most unconventional one that I have ever done. Usually we got things pinned down last year max and 3 months prior. However, this particular collection, everything was last minute.

To my standards, that’s low, but I guess, it has to go on. We only found the best idea on the spot, and Erzulliestas always deserve the best of us. So if this is the route that we have to go through to bring them that, I’ll adapt and take it.

Next, we are somewhat going back to our roots. You’ll figure it out later when the photos come out. Obviously, since Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Loren Monares, is the main inspiration of the collection, Erzullie designer and co-owner, Berna Cuevas chose her to model both the catalog and campaign.

The photographer is the great Mark Alvarez still. He is the one responsible for the raw photos of the Pre-Holiday 2012 onwards.

Finally, since Berna wants to pursue something different, she will be doing the makeup and styling for this photoshoot. So it’s going to be tedious. We are so used to working with a MUA recently so I really don’t know what to expect.

Also, I think this shoot just got even more personal with that.

Well that is our thoughts with regards to the upcoming photo shoot. Wish us great luck, ladies! We really need to continuously become better!

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: 3 IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING CLOTHES SHOPPING

Erzulliestas love to shop but they keep their style and wits while doing so. This way, they maximize their money, harmonize their style and keep things organized all the time. So what are the 3 important questions to ask when you shop to keep it all together?

#1 Will I really use it?

There are many times when we walk by, see this amazing clothing and we buy it. But then we don’t really get to use it as much. This is, of course, money wasted and to avoid that, always ask yourself --- will you really use it? If not, why buy it? If it’s all for ego, there are other ways to deal with that for free --- like throwing a compliment to yourself every 5 minutes.

#2 Brand name aside, do I really like this?

Sometimes, we get swept off with the brand name. However, at the end of the day, no one really has the time to identify what brand you are wearing (not unless that is the person’s work). So brand name aside, do you really like the way the clothing falls on your body? If it doesn’t then, why buy it?

#3 Do I need to buy anything else first, before this one?

Before you buy this garment, are there other financial obligations that you need to prioritize? Get those things first before you start to casually shop for things. This way, you got all of your other affairs in order and you don’t create a new problem that you will worry about later (like where will you get the money now for that important item because it turned into a shirt, instead).

PLUS SIZE POWER: “ALL WOMEN OF DIFFERENT SHAPES, COLOR AND SIZE ARE BEAUTIFUL”

Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Audrey Lee, shares her thoughts on what modeling has taught her: “All women of different shapes, color and size are beautiful.”

This is from her interview, “Lady Boss”. Just a little throwback!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: 3 WAYS TO WEAR A BLUE LACE PENCIL SKIRT

Sometimes, it’s easy to just buy black because “it goes with everything”, but so does your pencil skirt with details! Check out these 3 ways to style Erzullie’s plus size blue lace pencil skirt! (Which is part of the upcoming Holiday 2013 collection to be released on November 2013)

Look #1: “The Boss”

For the Erzulliesta Corporatista, make your bright toned skirt work appropriate by grounding it with some dark colors and keeping everything sophisticated and tasteful. A little constructive blazer is also in order.

Look #2: “The Date”

Present yourself in a classy and trendy way by combining this blue lace skirt with a top that is in the same family of color and is simple in cut. Add a little twinkle of accessories and you are good to go.

Look #3: “The Cutie”

Channel your “girly” side by experimenting with some pastel colors that compliments the hue of your skirt.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: (DESIGNER’S THOUGHTS) WHY THE HOLIDAY 2013 COLLECTION IS CALLED “DIAMOND”

For us, Erzulliestas are all diamonds, not only because of their expensive look and classy demeanor, but because of the process of how they were made. As such, we dedicate the Holiday 2013 collection to this aspect of an Erzulliesta’s life.

At first, it was supposed to be a continuation of the Pre-Holiday 2013 collection wherein the Erzulliesta and her new found man starts to date. However, as time flew by, Berna saw the story of a “complete Erzulliesta” that whether or not she has a man by her side, her value is always very high. Just like Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Loren Monares, who, with a tornado of responsibilities and a little bit of drama in her life, still manages to emerge with grace and poise each and every time.

Just like how a real diamond is made (from carbon, it is pressured and emerges to become one), every Erzulliesta started out as person full of potential and after a lot of challenges, she emerges as her beautiful, high valued self.

But it does not stop there, to perfect itself, the only way to do so is to be cut by another diamond. And it is with this symbolism that we believe that the only person that can form an Erzulliesta is herself --- her choice to always perfect and show her true value each and every time.

So, shine bright like a diamond, Erzulliestas! This collection is for you!

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: “RIGHT NOW, YOU LIVE A CHARMED LIFE”

Right now, you live a charmed life.

Recently, I have read an article in the Huffington post about the Gen Y and why they are all frustrated about their lives (well not all, to my view). The Gen Y people are the people who are born in the late 1970’s until mid 1990’s. Apparently, my generation is frustrated because when we are young, we given “a sense of optimism and unbounded possibilities”, but reality kicks in and we didn’t get what we want.

But then again, this is not just an isolated case with my generation. I observe this to almost any age group. We all get frustrated when we don’t get what we want or expected.

We all have these specific standards of what we will look like, how much money we will make and what career path we need to be on at a specific time frame. And then, when we don’t reach that, we think that we are a failure, thus the “unhappiness”. It is at that point that we should stop and see how far we have gone and how bigger we have made it than we actually thought (or anyone else) we would be.

We may not have achieved or own what we thought we would, but our lives are still blessed nonetheless. Everything that you are enjoying now is coveted by someone else --- guaranteed. As such, you do live a special life. Your life is someone’s vision of success so be happy and content knowing that you are doing okay.

Happiness is not about achieving what is in your head, but knowing that you are blessed right now this minute. So love that thought. Live it. You do live a charmed life.
