PLUS SIZE FASHION: 3 FALSE BODY MYTHS

I have been working with the fiercest plus size bodies for more than 8 years now. And although some have already awakened their Erzulliesta within, some are just about to have their Universe shaken up. What do I mean by that? There are some who come by the showroom to start their journey towards it. With that in mind, they tend to still carry with them some body myths that are not helpful to their journey. And hopefully, with a bit of time shared with us, they are able to let them go.

So what are these body myths?

#1 “I HAVE NO WAIST LINE, ARIES”

I am yet to meet a woman who does not have one and until that day comes, all that I can say is that… ALL WOMEN have a waist line. It is basically the smallest part of your torso.

And even if you “think” you do not have one, grab a belt and make one. Place it at the most comfortable and smallest part of your torso and there it is!

#2 “I HAVE TO LOOK SLIM. FASHION IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE LOOK SLIM.”

Actually, I think the term we are all really looking for is “flattering”. Flattering means it looks good on you and what “looks good on you” is a very fluid concept for fashion.

I mean think about it, some regular size women love adding volume and their aim is to add and make a specific shape that looks pleasing to the eye. Oversize is even a trend in fashion! So it is not just about looking slim. It is about looking flattering.

Furthermore, you can “look slim” with some fashion pieces of course, but if it is umcomfortable, you know you will never wear it!

#3 “MY DRESS SIZE IS A DIRECT REFLECTION OF MY HEALTH.”

Oh goodness. No. Other numbers like blood pressure, blood count, heartbeat rate and so on are the direct indications and reflections of your health.

DRESS SIZE depends on fabric and style. You will bounce from one size to another DEPENDING on those two characteristics.

So please, for the sake of your own health, never consult your stylist for your physical well-being! Lol.

PLUS SIZE DESIGNER: BOHOL BABE PART I | NATURA VISTA & MITHI

Thoughts? This is an Erzullie lightweight maxi pants from 2011. 7 years and still looking brand new.

To some of my women who follow me in my personal account in Instagram (mother_fierce), you may have seen my sudden escapade to Panglao, Bohol. Okay, not so sudden… planned it last 2017. Haha.

I have decided to stay there for 2 weeks and have my own experience of “eat, pray and love” (Damn you, Liz Gilbert. WHY DO YOU WRITE THE WORDS OF MY SOUL? Lol). Truth be told, it is very insightful. But that would be for the next articles. This is just me telling you about the stay itself.

If you are looking for an actual provincial experience head on to Natura Vista. One thing I can tell you is that it is exactly as how people would describe it in terms of infrastructure and people. The setting is cute. The people are great human beings.

I have found them via AIR BNB. Now, they are situated near the beach (2 minute walk tops!) BUT it is quite a walk/scooter adventure to go from the hotel to the main road. It is maximum of 30 minutes to Alona Beach, where the famous Buzz Café and beach pumping Hennan Hotel is located. You can take a tricycle (ask the receptionist), ask Natura for a car or just take a scooter and go. (Go for a scooter!)

MITHI RESORT

If you want to have a nearby swimming pool experience, just ask the receptionist if you can visit the nearby Mithi hotel. If there are not a lot of humans, Mithi will let you in. Now, mind you… the food there is not my preference. I personally love the cook in Natura Vista better --- brown nice, no msg and just yummy Boholano cuisine.

Now, going to Mithi, I highly suggest to just get a scooter. The receptionist will say that you can just “walk it off”, you can if you want, but it’s really a long walk. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE.

The beach near Natura, for me, a notorious beach wader, is perfect already. Despite the review that it is not swimmable, it is actually swimmable at certain points of time (6am-12nn is your best bet for high tide). The place has patches of sea grass. Please be careful when you step on them --- STARFISHES ARE EVERYWHERE lol.

I think in my two-weeks of stay and swimming there, there are barely any jellyfishes… 2 (1 small and 1 big one in different days. The clarity of the water will make you see them immediately, which is a good thing and they happen in the morning). Sea urchins? I did not see them, but bring your aqua shoes to be safe.

The water is clean and for a public fisherman village beach, white sand-wise, it is relatively clean. There are actually some fishermen that go out in the morning to clean it up. But again, beaches will be beaches. Trash gets washed up there even if you constantly become on guard 24/7. What can I say? Humans. 

The fishermen there are respectful people. I wore a bikini there and they gave me that look of ambivalence. They do not care what size you are and what you look in the bathing suit. They are used to seeing foreigners doing and wearing whatever they want.

In fact, the funniest things happened there… I went there wearing a bikini and there was this plus size Filipino fisherman with his net walking on the beach happy about his catch, wearing probably the most NEON G-STRING swimwear I have seen on a man all my life. He was old. Probably in his 40’s and 50’s. He looked at me, tapped his big tummy and gave me 2 thumbs up then walked off.

I laughed. This man gets it. 

Now the beach in Mithi? Absolutely swimmable. They really landscaped the place so that you can swim in there without the sea grass and the small strip of clean white sand is cute. Swimming pools are also great --- the water was warm when I got there. There are mosquitoes (as any part of the world – don’t worry, it’s not like it’s a plague. Just presence). So make sure that you got your insect repellent aside from your sunblock.

P.S. INTERNET IS SPARSE IN THE AREA. Like AS LOW AS 4KBPS levels.

PLUS SIZE FASHION: 3 FASHION ROUTINES FOR A HEALTHY WARDROBE

Your close is a sacred space. It is where your arsenal of fierce curve clothing resides (yes, we are talking about your Erzullie pieces). So how do you keep the fierceness going? Here are 3 fashion routines for a healthy wardrobe.

#1 Curate every month.

When we say curate, we are saying that you should go into your closet and make sure that you are still loving all of the pieces in there. This way, you know that you are getting what you paid for and there was no wasted money on clothes. If you see that you are starting to diverge again into a style that is really not yours, then at least you have a note that you should not be doing specific purchasing habits.

We say monthly because it is easier to do in small dosages than actual big batches.

#2 Cleanse every year.

When we say cleanse, we meant purging those clothes that you no longer wear, fit you or even look good. Put them in a box to sell in a garage sale or donate them to those who need it.

You can also cleanse your bags (they carry A LOT OF GERMS... think about it, you place it in every possible surface possible) and jewelry if you can.

We say yearly because this will give enough reason to really let go of those pieces that you no longer really use. I mean come on... IT HAS BEEN A YEAR.

#3 Construct outfits weekly.

Taking time for your style is taking time for yourself too. If you want to cut your dressing time in half and always look good every day, constructing your outfits weekly would definitely help you.

Lay them all out and start styling it by hanger. Zip them all up and label Monday to Sunday.

This way, you will know what’s up for your week ahead. You already know what to wear for that day and get to know your closet even better.

I had this moment in my life wherein someone told me to "not dress up so much" so that she will not look like a haggard maid.

But I really felt good that day. It didn't matter if people did not understand it. But I love every bit of fashion I wore that day.

PLUS SIZE FASHION: HOW STYLE AFFECTS SELF-ESTEEM

There was a man that I talked to once and he told me that my work, being a plus size fashion designer, is actually a waste of space and time here on Earth. He thinks that the fashion industry is laughable and that fashion in itself is frivolous.

Funny how this man, wearing a plaid shirt from American Eagle, Jeans from Old Navy and Jordan Rubber shoes would say that to me.

Fashion is more than just keeping people warm (the basic function of it, of course). It also keeps the self-esteem hot too!

And without self-esteem then there would not be confidence. Without confidence, no bravado. No bravado, no life changing decisions. No life changing decisions, no change in life! (Obviously)

So how does style affect self-esteem?

Simple.

It is all about how what you wear makes you feel.

In the case of this man who told me that my work is not important, all that American Eagle, Old Navy and Jordans makes him feel something --- good, bad or ironic. It doesn’t matter. Point is, style will affect the way you feel and therefore will affect the way that you are going to go about your day.

Think about it. There were moments wherein you were so happy, no amount of negativity in the world can touch it. Same with the other route.

To some, the effects can be fleeting, to some lasting. Whatever it may be, style can help you with your self-esteem. And with that in mind, we highly recommend that you go and try dressing up the way you want to feel.

Want to feel like a boss? Power up with a suit. Want to feel like a goddess? A nice, long, maxi dress is in order. Want to feel fierce in your curves? AHEM --- ERZULLIE. Haha.
