Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Kat Lopez, shares her thoughts on the current Philippine Plus Size Fashion Industry and how the new breed/breath of Filipina plus size models are changing it, one project at a time.
#1 What do you think of the current Philippine Plus Size Fashion Industry?
The local scene is starting to hold regular plus size fashion events, activities, print media and videos, just like our international counterparts but only in its initial phases. We still have a long way to go, but we're getting there.
#2 Given the current state of the local plus size modeling industry, what have you observed about the current batch of Filipina Plus Size Models?
We are a diverse group of women who communicate the same thing: everybody is beautiful. We are closely linked to the women that buy the clothes (since it's still a smaller community). Thus, we can touch the lives of these patrons in a more impactful way.
They are also getting more exposure in popular media now, and in a better light. They are now in campaigns that celebrate the elegance and sensuality of any shape and size of women. The Erzullie 2013 Anniversary campaign has definitely broken another barrier in that sense.
#3 Speaking of the 2013 Anniversary campaign, what do you think being a new breed of plus size model means?
The new breed of plus size models is confident in their own skin. They are not afraid to delve into themes that are stereotypically associated with regular-sized models.
And for those who are about to becoming the next batch, my suggestion would be to know and celebrate who you are, connect with the people, be professional and be informed of both the local and international industry.
