PLUS SIZE FASHION: A SUGGESTED 2014 FASHION AND STYLE RESOLUTIONS

As the year 2014 opens, the opportunity of improving our fashion and style is yet upon us. Let’s cease this opportunity and embrace new positive fierce plus size fashion habits! (You may also want to read our 2013 resolutions --- still have some good wisdom there.)

#1 I will only buy the best.

If we think about it, a high quality, Php 1,500 garment (approx. $35) that we buy once a year and use it all year round (even more) in different styling is a better investment than buying 10 pcs. of poor quality Php 250.00 (total Php 2,500 approx. $58) because it is easily ripped or discolored.

#2 As much as possible, I will buy from the local plus size fashion scene.

2013 showed me a lot of new and exciting local plus size brands and the creativity is outstanding! This year, I aim to wear more local plus size fashion brands as much as possible. I think it will be good to rejuvenate my style.

#3 I will curate my closet better.

Curating your closet will help you define your style, make your personality more concrete, save you money from buying things you will never use and maximize all of your garments! If that is not fashion & style utopia, I don’t know what is!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: MY 2013 “TAKE AND LEAVE” LIST

It’s the end of the year and with an avalanche of “resolutions post”, which shamefully, I will be doing later on, I was thinking about my last and only goodbye to 2013.

So what are the things that I want to leave here in 2013?

#1 The constant self-pity. It’s such an irony that I am promoting “fierceness” when in myself I do not feel or even practice it. But good to note, I am correcting it now.

#2 People that waste my hope. I love seeing the goodness of people, but sometimes when a person does not choose it--- ever, hoping for it is tiring. I’d rather channel my hope to people who uses it to remember their goodness.

#3 Gossip. It’s unreliable and I’d rather be a confidant of someone’s secret than someone telling me about someone’s secrets. It’s more deep and fulfilling.

With that goodbye, what do I take with me?

#1 Good and worthy relationships. I have made so much meaningful connections this year that helped me grow. I will take this with me and nourish it more.

#2 New found skills and solutions. Gone are the days that I feel insecure about my abilities with regards to how to handle Erzullie. I will take this with me and improve them.

#3 The ability to not use social media so much. This year, I was able to train myself to minimize my need to use it personally. I find it liberating and the connections, more meaningful.

PLUS SIZE NEWS: ERZULLIE’S YEAR 2013 RECAP

Just some things that happened this 2013 year that gloriously shaped Erzullie to its upwards direction.

#1 Erzullie’s Secret Sale (Up to 70% off!) last January. It was the first and only time that we went that far in discount. New Erzullie Icons were crowned --- Audrey Lee and Kat Lopez.

#2 February was the month where Erzulliesta Timmy Mariano went on board as an intern and revolutionized the content of the blogs. The first post for plus size opinion was done too: “Are you brave enough?”

#3 The first issue of The Erzulliesta was launched in March 2013, as well as the first ever Corporate 2013 collection.

#4 April was the birth month of the first Erzulliesta mantra --- “I am confident with my curves.”

#5 By May, we started making style inspirations called, “Wednesday Wear”. First theme was: “Graphic Flow”. Our first solo Pop Shop also happened this month.

#6 Probably the most memorable event in June was the “Fierce+Flaunt” event, where we partnered with plus size brand Chubbly. The union of all the fashionable plus size Filipinas was positively exhilarating!

#7 July marked the change in Erzullie as we have launched our first ever demi-couture plus size collection via the Pre-Holiday season. Erzulliestas loved it so much it got sold out even before the year was out!

#8 August was the month was started posting “Saturday Styles”, wherein we feature Erzulliestas wearing Erzullie. We also joined instagram (@erzullie_plussize) that month.

#9 We launched the column “Thursday tips” on September and the first post was “3 not-so-good shopping habits”. Since it was also a globally declared, fashion month, we celebrated it with “The Fashion Feast event”. It was also the month wherein we shared the first ever Erzulliesta’s story about “surviving fashion debt/death”.

#10 Last October, we had our first try opening a pop shop in Alabang. You Erzulliestas, of course, made it successful! We also privately launched our Holiday 2013 collection.

#11 November --- Anniversary month! What can we say? New Breed/Breath and the Holiday 2013 collection reigns supreme!

#12 December was rocking as international plus size blogger, Garner Style, shared a photo of Erzullie’s interview of Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Audrey Lee, on her facebook page. We also gave you girls a sneak peek about the 2014 collections.

These are just some of the memories and experiences that made Erzullie and our lives as designers better. Thank you, Erzulliestas for the constant business!

PLUS SIZE POWER: “I LEAVE BEHIND WHAT NO LONGER SUITS ME.”

We change and grow --- it’s the natural state of our lives. As such, leave the things that no longer suits you here in 2013, and make more room for the opportunities that 2014 is about to bring!

And when we say suit, it may mean things that no longer fit --- not just fashion or style wise --- but also people, thoughts and situations that has been negatively haunting you in your present. Leave them at 2013 because you are about to rack up better memories and experiences this year! (Nevermind what people might say, the important part is what you think!)

Alternatively, you may also choose to let go of things that you no longer want to be with, even if you think that it's still useful to you. If you are scared to let go of relationships, detrimental situations or just plain ill-fitting jeans, thinking that you may  have nothing left in the future, think again! You live in a massive universe overflowing with blessings that are meant for anyone who asks for it. Choose to let it go and let life flow back in. The past is the past and today is your weapon to shape your future!

PLUS SIZE MODEL: KAT CATAPIA ON BEING SEDUCTIVE

Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Kat Catapia, was the face of the successful Pre-Holiday 2013 campaign. The theme of which was “seductive”. In the interview, “Model Behavior”, she was asked what she felt being asked to do this historic campaign. Her reply:


“It’s an advocacy for plus size women to be comfortable with their bodies… feel seductive.”

PLUS SIZE LIFE: 3 QUICK WAYS TO RELAX FOR FREE

The Holiday Rush maybe over and the slew of party invitations may have dwindled down, but here are 3 quick ways to detox and relax yourself after all the stress! Much better? It can be done for free!


#1 Drink water for the whole day

Ditch the cappuccinos, teas and the sodas and start cleansing yourself with some good old water. It helps you flush out the toxins in your body, re-hydrate and rejuvenate you all at the same time!

#2 Turn off all social media

If you just went through one party after another, surely you have done ENOUGH socializing and absorption of other people’s ideas, quips etc. Just for one day, stay away from the chatter and just relax. Sleep. Put your feet up and watch television, read a book or just plain enjoy the moment!

#3 Take time to sit down and just breathe for a few minutes

For others, this is called meditation, but for the newbies, it’s basically just focusing on your breathing, being still and aware of your body. Meditation is known to relax and slow down almost anyone. It takes practice but it will help you at least be aware of your breathing. A few minutes of this and you will come out refreshed!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: THE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF

Christmas is coming and as we go about scavenging for last minute shopping of gifts for the people that we care about (and those who we just feel obligated to), let’s take a moment to remember the real important stuff in our lives.

This may vary from one person to another, as values are never universal, but for me the real important stuff is the life that we have right now. We are too busy trying to make a life, when life is what we are constantly making. Every move, breath and connection is the life that we are unconsciously having, yet relentlessly chasing.

If you have time, remember how lucky you are that you have a functioning body (fully healthy or recovering). Some people would like to have a chance to be able to breathe without a machine or eat without counting the sodium in it.

If you have time, call up your family. All families have their ups and downs and it has taken a lot of forms. It can be your biological, emotional or spiritual ones. Whatever it is, these are the people that influenced you and changed your life one way or another. Take time to call them up and re-connect authentically.

If you have time, be thankful for your capabilities to have a job (whether in transition or you already have one). A lot of people may not have your opportunities and would like to have it. So you are one of the lucky batch to have this. Feel grateful and exercise this gift before you miss it.

Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Loren Monares, shares her experiences as a woman emerging victorious from a disastrous pivotal moment of her life. Being dubbed as the “Diamond Girl” by her fans, she is more than just the face of Erzullie’s Holiday 2013 collection --- she actually lives it and shares why every woman should have the title.

#1 It’s another collection shoot for you (Holiday 2013) but this time Erzullie designer, Berna Cuevas, literally said that you inspired it. What can you say about that and the collection itself?

I feel grateful as I never thought that my life could inspire others.

When I first saw the collection, the words that came out of my mind were firm, positive and pure.  For me these are the things that define me as a woman.

To be specific, I love the white dress because it's the first time that Erzullie broke the old tradition of white clothing as "no-no" for plus size women. When you wear it, you realize that it’s not bad at all as long as you have the right cut, design and fit.

#2 The message of the collection is basically about Erzulliestas emerging glorious after a huge obstacle. Can you relate to that?

Yes. I think one of my biggest obstacles this year was ending a relationship. It was difficult to let go of a person whom you thought would have been your lifetime partner.

I have realized that there are things that happen which we do not understand, but continue to have faith in God that He knows better and what's best for us. It was a conscious effort from me to move on and face the new chapter of my life with positivity and hope for a better future. Of course, all of these weren't possible without the help of my family and friends.

#3 For you, what makes a woman a “diamond” in her own right?

It's basically the ability to be firm and stand up every time she gets crushed. She is able to mend the broken pieces and rebuild herself into a stronger individual, capable of facing the world with confidence, courage, wiser and more beautiful. We are unique from each other but united in glory.

I think self-dates are important for every woman. Single or not, it’s a time to actually just focus on yourself and what you want. Self dates will actually make you feel powerful and independent knowing that you can be on your own and still find pleasure from it.

Here are 3 ideas that you may want to do on your next self-date!

#1 Visit a new restaurant 

Treat it like an adventure. Get away from the usual restaurants that you have visited and try on a new one! There is a plethora of amazing choices out there in the Metro in almost all price points possible. There is bound to be one that has your self-date venue all over it.

#2 Movie night

Surely there is one movie that you have always wanted to watch but never got to. Whether it is a download, DVD or on the movie theaters, why not watch it on your own and enjoy it all by yourself? Dish out snacks, a comfortable chair and some blankets to make you feel more pampered.

#3 Home Spa

Spa time is me-time as I always say! Taking time to relax and take care of your body is another wonderful way to date yourself.

You can even do it at home. Take a longer bath and treat yourself to your favorite body scrubs, hair treatments and even dish out the expensive bath soap! Decorate your bathroom with small candles and some aromatherapy scents that you love. You can even go all out and put some fresh flowers in there.
