On her rise to fame, Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Loren Monares has been thrown under the microscope. Doing one of the most either controversial or inspirational moments on Philippine Television and modeling for an international Magazine, this woman finally speaks out the truth about it all.
#1 You have recently been featured in Showtime which drew in a spectrum of reactions. How did you deal with it?
I respect the different opinions or views we have towards a particular matter. I understand that we have different backgrounds and experiences, which creates variety in how we perceive things. So I thank all those who appreciated our performance in the show and for those who felt otherwise, again, I respect them because that is their right.
#2 So what was your perspective with regards that performance?

The objective of that production number was to showcase beauty equality --- that you can be beautiful whether you are thin or fat, tall or short, and old or young. That’s why the song all throughout was “Just the way you are”. There may be minor flaws during the entire production number, but for me, looking at the bigger picture, I appreciate the effort of the show to slowly embrace equality and starting to give way to plus size women on national TV.
#3 Do you regret doing it?

I definitely don’t regret it. The experience was very priceless. I enjoyed a lot, from the support of the dancers during the practice, with the overwhelming cheers from the audience during the performance, with the new friends I met, The very warm treatment that the staff and hosts of the show gave us, and most especially, the idea that I was able to inspire many people and make them happy.
#5 You were also invited by an international plus size model magazine for a feature. How did that come about?

This, I must say, was something that I really didn’t expect! But then again, opportunity came to me and I was up for the challenge. It was a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Excited because this is the first time that I would be doing an International project. Nervous, at same time, because I will be representing plus size Filipinas. I want to show how empowered we are as plus size women and that we live by the deeper meaning of true beauty.
Of course, it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my Erzullie family, especially to Aries for guiding me through the brainstorming up to the final shoot and Karla and Ian from Ian is Digital for being very supportive and easy to work with. I was very happy with the result and I believe I got what I wanted to showcase in that magazine.
#6 You are the longest running Erzullie Icon, and it seems like so far, the brand has no intentions of dropping you. How do you keep your stature fresh in the brand?

I’m very grateful that Erzullie is still willing to have me represent their brand despite the many batches of new breed models that came. Personally, I think the key to keeping my stature fresh in the brand is the effort of continuously rediscovering myself. Of course, it also goes with flexibility and capability to adopt with the changing demands or interest of people.
