PLUS SIZE POWER: HOW TO LOVE THE CURVES YOU’RE IN

Erzulliestas already have a triple PHD degree on this one. I can even imagine that some are just born loving their curves from the get to. But for those who are wondering or even just starting, here are my thoughts on HOW TO LOVE THE CURVES YOU’RE IN.

But before we go straight to that, let’s know first what does it mean to love the curves you’re in. I don’t know if you ladies have read this article “how to love the life you’re in”, but I am just going to pluck a wisdom from there and place it in this one. Modified, of course.

We are talking about waking up early in the morning and you feel GREAT about your body. In fact, you are loving it so much that no matter what shape or size you are in, you are so happy to just even have it. Thinner, fatter, smoother, rougher, wrinkly, lighter, darker --- however it’s customized that day --- you will always look at your body and say, “Damn. That’s one great body. I’m going to rock this today”.

With that aside, how do we get to that?

For me it starts with the acceptance of this fact: “all bodies are different and the magnanimity of beauty is so vast, it encompasses all of us as part its definition.”

It’s a fact, ladies. No amount of denial can actually make it go away. It’s as real as the Universe we live in and the laws that govern it. Beauty is all around us and we can’t escape the fact that we are and will always be part of it.

So it’s time to embrace that fact. We are beautiful because we are here. And truth of the matter is, we are all the definitions of beauty.

I want you to remember that this is your body. It was given to you. And why? Because you are mean to do great things with it. One of which is the juiciest part the second way to love the curves you’re in: enjoy it.

And how do you enjoy it? You use it.

Dance with it. Make babies with it. Kiss it. Run with it. Exercise with it. Do yoga with it. Make love with it. Cry, create, lift, jump, walk, see etc.

Use this mighty instrument with you and run with it. Experience the benefits each body part gives you.

Let your hands create, write, touch, feel, massage, point, do weird finger signs. Let your feet take you anywhere you please, kick, stretch, swim and put shoes on them. Let your tummy get filled with food and adorned with amazing belts. It can even do amazing core exercises!

Let your ears hear or even appreciate silence and get adorned with earrings. Adorn your boobs (BIG OR SMALL) with the sexiest bras and comfortable tops. Sway your hips as you walk and exude subtle seduction. The point is --- USE YOUR BODY and reap the benefits of every action. Learn to experience your body by using it for what’s its for --- to live.

And just like any tool, your body needs care, which is the third way to love the curves you’re in.
Eat the best food. Spoil yourself a little when you can. Exercise and relax often. Moisturize your skin. Adapt a beauty regimen. Make appointments for an annual check-up. Start looking at caring for your health as well. After all, the healthier you are, the longer your body will run. And the longer your body will run, the more time you get to enjoy it.

And the more you enjoy it, the more loving you will be towards your body because you see how amazing it is. And the more you see how amazing it is, you are going to want to keep on rocking it and finally always see it for what it really is --- fierce curves.

PLUS SIZE POWER: HOW TO LOVE THE LIFE YOU ARE IN (PART 2)

FROM PART I:

I can go on and be narcissistic about this. At the end of the day, I’m pretty sure someone out there would like to be in my place. And me? I need to start becoming wiser and enjoy the experience that someone would like to have.

This then leads me to the question --- why am I not in love with it in the first place?

...

First off, as I told you, I had a life plan 8 years ago and well it didn’t work out well. So I was thinking that since I wasn’t able to manifest what I sought out to do, I failed as a person. I failed as woman. EVEN WORSE--- I have failed me!

But then again, just because “I didn’t do what I was told to do” or “get what I was supposed to get” doesn’t mean that it was the really wrong thing to do or I failed. I just got other achievements if you look at it.

I may not have a husband, but I have a great lover who actually is patient enough to go through my highs and lows.

I may not have kids, but I do have a lot of great people in my life and some of them have kids! I get to baby sit them for short periods of time and still be able to do what I love after.

I may not have a house, but I do have my own place. It’s in a big building, with great security, a gym and a swimming pool.

I may not have a part time job, but I do have a full time business AND a lot of part time jobs that I like to do.

So, technically, I didn’t fail. I just decided along the way that I wanted other things that are way better.

Next, I compare myself to the people my age. And THIS ONE is my favorite (sense my sarcastic tone).

You know that moment wherein it’s 2 am and you are on social media and you see people your age doing parties, getting married, getting engaged, having boyfriends, loving babies, having dogs, traveling like a celebrity etc. and there you are in front of your laptop in the dark with a scrunch up hair, big shirt that hasn’t been washed for 2 days and in your undie, drinking some soda and eating some chips?

Yes. That moment.

It starts to make you question. Am I living my life to the fullest? The rest of the people around me seems like they are living a “on-the-go” life all the time. Something is always happening to them. They are always having something new. They always have something taken “to the next level”.

And me? I was browsing and viewing their experiences.

Anyway, as always, one of my Erzullie Icons, Kat Lopez, came to the rescue. She shared with me this article about Facebook making people depressed. (I can’t find it anymore but seriously, type facebook and depression and a lot of articles will pop out) I have realized at that point that what the people in my feed are sharing is just the best snippets of their life.

For all I know, it’s just for show. And truth of the matter is, people share what they really just want to share. So imagine what they are not sharing online.

From then on, I actually stopped using that as a point of comparison. Social media is handy tool to document your life, but then remember --- you will only want to document what you want to. Not everything is saved.

Finally, the reason that I don’t love it as much is because I feel as though I did not deserve it.
Whuuuuuuuuutttttt, Aries? Seriously?

Yes, girl. Seriously.

My career in the fashion industry started roughly 8 years ago. I only had a passion for it. We really just wanted to do a business. Eventually, it just became a life purpose. So ultimately, me and Berna just dared to do something because we just really felt like this is what we should be doing with our lives.

Everything that I have learned, I have learned through experience, books, YouTube videos, other people etc. I did go to Fashion school for 1 module and did not even finish it up to the end. Helped me a lot nonetheless. Berna went to Slim’s and that helped a lot in improving the brand.

But personally for me, I just have a feeling that I still have something to earn my place in the fashion industry. Despite the fact that I do call myself a plus size fashion designer (you ladies have seen my sketches, our process etc.) I still feel as though I need to really earn that job title. Like I need to have that moment in my life wherein it’s really official --- I am a plus size fashion designer.

Stupid. I know.

Because at the end of the day, I can line up Erzullie’s achievements and evidences of her success, but if I say “it’s not worth anything” --- it’s really not going to be worth anything.

So what does that mean? Value is determined by me. And if right now, as of writing, I cannot define a single “requirement” of what it really takes for me to finally believe that I am a designer, then maybe I should accept the fact that I am talking crazy.

Truth of the matter is, I do deserve it. I spent hours of my life doing this. I spent brain cells and lung capacity to take photos, make decisions, calculations, marketing, public relations etc. This life that I am living? It wasn’t handed to me. I worked my way towards it.

So yes. Yes dumb nuts (I am talking to me) --- I do deserve it.

Since all those things have already been debunked, we now turn to another question --- WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LOVE THE LIFE YOU ARE IN?

Well, I am talking about that moment wherein you wake up every day in the morning and your first thought is, “I am so happy and blessed to wake up today. I get to do live one more day to do all the things that I love!” or at least this one, “I don’t care how bad it is today. I will get through it and I will do it all over again in a heartbeat because I love it.”

Those kinds of thoughts.

That’s what we are aiming for here.

You know you love your life when whether or not it’s going to be a good day, bad day, hard day, soft day, inactive day --- ANY KIND OF DAY --- to your heart you know, it’s going to be the best one for your spirit.

WHICH NOW LEADS US TO THE MAIN QUESTION--- HOW DO YOU LOVE THE LIFE YOU’RE IN?

PLUS SIZE POWER: HOW TO LOVE THE LIFE YOU ARE IN (PART 1)

So you got everything already --- love, money, career, friends, family and style --- how come you’re still not happy?

I find myself asking this question recently but before I get ahead of myself, I want to give you a little background of how all of this started.

8 years ago, I saw my 27 year old self to be married with kids. I have a house and I work part time, while attending to the needs of the house and my family. Yes. That was my simple dream.

Fast forward to the future, I am 30 years of age. I am not married. I don’t have kids. I work full time for Erzullie and part time as a fashion journalist and I, instead of kids, attend to the styling needs of my Erzulliestas. Yes. This is now my reality.

It’s a far cry from what I have planned 8 years ago. And to be honest, I was bummed about it. I was starting to question my life choices.

Did I actually make the right choices? If not, is it too late for me to start over?

If I look at my current life, it’s actually pretty great. I am a plus size fashion designer/writer. I take amazing plus size fashion photos. I work with amazing and creative people. I style the sassiest and fiercest curves in the Metro.

Work hour flexibility is amazing. I get paid to do what I love. It provides the essentials of survival --- even more. I organize parties. I interview Erzulliestas. I can watch movie whenever I want. I live in a safe neighborhood.

I can go on and be narcissistic about this. At the end of the day, I’m pretty sure someone out there would like to be in my place. And me? I need to start becoming wiser and enjoy the experience that someone would like to have.

This then leads me to the question --- why am I not in love with it in the first place?

PLUS SIZE LIFE: 3 MOMENTS THAT SAY, "IT'S TIME TO CHANGE"

Nothing is permanent in this world, and we all can’t help it if we evolve from one self to another. As such, in the cycle of change when do we recognize the signs that it’s time to say “good bye” to our old self and embrace the new one that knows of a better life? Here are my experiences.

#1 You just know.

If you are very in tune with yourself and your needs, then most probably you know you have been yelling for something new and bright in your life. Embrace it. If you know it’s time to change, then it’s time to change.

#2 There’s no challenge anymore.

It’s not that you are a drama queen. Wanting a challenge in life can be healthy for someone because overcoming it boosts self-esteem and pushes you to go further than you thought you could.

Challenges provide room for growth and if you feel that there is a lack of that, then maybe it’s time to look for some. You have mastered this current self already. Time to elevate.

#3 You are just plain unhappy right now.

The truth is, the world is only as kind or as harsh as we perceive it to be. We cannot control what is out there. As such, we cannot wait for the world to change for the life we want. We have to change for it. So if you are unhappy and want to have something new, then maybe it’s time for you to embrace a whole new self --- maybe a more positive one?

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE TIP: 3 WAYS TO MAKE CHANGES MORE COMFORTABLE

Everybody in life goes through some change. May it be in love, style or career, change always brings both good and bad feelings for everyone. So how can we make it more pleasurable for us to ride in? Here are 3 ways:

#1 Keep a journal

With a lot of social media platforms, you’d think keeping a journal would be irrelevant. However, a journal gives you more freedom and reign in what you write and feel without being judged. Admit it. The things that we post in social media are most of the time edited. Also admit that those who don’t know how to edit and keep on posting are just annoying.

So don’t be that annoying person and handle change with grace. Keep a journal and start expressing yourself there --- good or bad.

#2 Find an amazing support group

Currently we call ourselves, “Sanity Checkers”. Me, Berna, Ish and Cams meet every now and then to catch up with each other and share our life stories. We give each other insights and enjoy great food while we are together.

This keeps us “sane” with all the insanity going on in our lives. A support group will give you individual insights that will make you think on how to lift you up, while you do the same for others.

#3 Just “ride the wave”

Change can bring chaos into your life --- a sense of dishevelment. And although society has trained us to keep things in order all of the time, these are the moments when you just have to let go and ride the wave of it all. It may not be to your liking right now, but it will settle sooner or later. Just ride the wave and you will be drifted to the shore.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE LIFE: GOOD LUCK VS. GOOD GUTS

We may be the captain of our ships, but could it be that it’s on a sea of fate? What can the captain do?

I woke up today with this bad notion in my head. According to my Feng Shui 2014 book, this month is not good for me in all aspects. I am actually scared because this month actually started great for me. And then, this happens.

Usually, my instincts are right. I don’t care if there is no scientific basis. This is what works for me and well my instincts are 97% of the time correct. And right now, my instincts are telling me that I should look at the good things in life.

I may not have control over what happens externally, but the way that I process it is all up to me. As I have mentioned in the question at the start --- we are the captain of our own ships, but just like any ship, we do not have control over what the sea would bring us.

And right now, I have to get it in my head that a silly book that I bought in Greenhills may present to me what can commonly happen around ‘my sea’, but how I deal with it is all up to me. Am I going to tell my ship to retreat or fortify it to be stronger?

I choose to be stronger. I believe in good luck and it comes from me. I make my own good fortune. We may all have a specific fate or destiny before us, but how rocky or smooth that ride is --- is the decision of the captain itself.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE TIP: 3 WAYS TO FEEL “OH-SO-SEXY”

Recently, I have been undergoing some changes and with it, a new style. What I have learned so far was how to channel that oh-so-sexy feeling.

To be honest, I have always felt fear with that word --- “sexy”.  Maybe it was the way I was brought up, but I have realized that just like anything else in this world, it’s up to me if I take it to the light or dark side. I choose the light side --- the one where channeling your sensuality as a woman makes it empowering. Feeling sexy just makes me feel so good about myself that every time I wake up to it, I feel that my day is just going to be the best day ever.

So what are the 3 things (out of the many things) that I usually do to make me feel this energy daily? Here it is!

#1 Find, choose and wear the right dress

It’s worth it ladies. Finding the perfect dress that makes your curves look like it’s a gift from the heavens is worth your time and money. Not only will you look good, you will feel marvelous when you are in it. And anything that makes a woman feel great about herself is worth anything!

Not a dress person? Then find a style that makes you feel dangerously seductive.

#2 Care for that hair

Nevermind if you are wearing ripped off jeans and plain shirt, if your hair looks like it’s about to hit the red carpet, you will feel like a star each and every time.

#3 Waking up to a beautiful you

I know that this may come out as weird, but I fix myself up before I go to bed so that when I wake up, I can proudly say, “I woke up like this” ala Beyonce. It’s a great way to start your day too! Seeing yourself effortlessly beautiful the first thing in the mirror is a sexy meter booster.

So wear a nice lingerie. Care for your hair and face before you go to bed. It’s called beauty sleep for something!

PLUS SIZE LIFE: DETOX YOUR LIFE

Feeling constantly sad about yourself and life? Maybe you are living the toxic life (like me).

To be honest, I was sad about myself. I don’t know why. So I took a 2 week break comprised of a personal retreat and a Palawan getaway. Personal retreat was just okay, but Palawan was filled with island hopping, great family time, amazing food and the people there are my kind of people --- funny ones. I just felt peaceful for the first time in a long time.

Back in the city, my man picked me up from the airport and we went straight to BGC for dinner. I know that it was only a few days, but it felt strange. I didn’t know why.

Then I spotted a group of people from my old college. I didn’t approach them, but I heard them talk about the “best and wildest (event, car, style, life, food etc.)” they ever had or “the latest about (name of person/social media)”. They were all trying to one up each other or bring another person down.

You’d think that’s a fluke but at the other table, I saw a guy get pissed off at the waitress because he wanted to be served first, when the family before him asked for the woman’s assistance first. He then added the usual line of “don’t you know who I am?” while his girlfriend sunk in her seat. (Honestly, even I didn’t. Sorry, dude.)

As I walked and saw all the high end stores surrounding me, I have realized that everything in my life was all about being at the top of the pyramid. My internal sadness was all about the fraud expectations that the culture around me has instilled in me. I felt that I wasn’t good enough because everyone around me was telling me how great they got it, and I made that as the standard for my life. But then I have realized --- how many of us really got it great? How many of us here are actually willing to admit that our life is just so “norm-core”?

That’s what I have learned in Palawan. Everyone there is just normal. No one was saying they were wearing, eating and living the latest, best etc. whatever. They were all just there living the beach life and enjoying the family, food, friends and culture. It was all about life itself --- the connection of the self with what you are doing.

And so right now, I am in the process of cleansing my life of its toxicity. It might take a while but at least, I know I am headed to a better direction. If you can connect with this, woman --- get out while you can.

Cheers!

Aries

PLUS SIZE TIP: 3 REASONS WHY YOU MAY BE FEELING WORTHLESS

So you got everything and you are thankful, but how come you feel like nothing? Here are some reasons:

#1 You are exhausted.

It’s a common “independent woman syndrome”. We work too hard to get what we want and need, to the point that we forget that we also get tired. Even if you are passionate with what you do, just remember that that passion is housed in a body that gets tired and stressed too. So be kind. Take time.

The way to deal with it? TAKE A VACATION. A long one. If you have been stuck in a routine for quite some time, do one last thing that any independent woman would do --- rescue yourself and take yourself to that beautiful sunset of self-care.

#2 You feel unappreciated by others

Women can be hyper-provider at times. The worst? Not to ourselves but others. We love rescuing others more than ourselves and although it’s a noble thing, it doesn’t help for anyone to at least recognize that effort now, right?

Be at peace. It’s not a bad thing to want a little appreciation. In fact, it’s just a longing for us to know if we are still doing the right thing. After all, what if these people never wanted that attention from us? Wouldn’t it also be easier for them to tell us so that we can stop and make them feel comfortable again?

So what do you do? One, cut these people off. It’s harsh. We know. But these people are called emotional vampires and goodness knows that your whole life has a lot of it. Focus on the people that actually do appreciate you. Your life will be so much richer.

Next, maybe demand a little appreciation. It’s really okay. Just tell people that you want to be appreciated. You will be surprised how others will rush in to make you feel that.

#3 You have postponed self-growth for other people.

Change is the only permanent thing in this world. As dramatic as that may sound, it is true. Sometimes we feel that we need to change and grow, but the only thing that is stopping us is the ones that we love. We fear that with this change, some of them might stay, while others leave.

Even though this is true, it’s actually a great thing for you. A true friend/lover is the one that loves you for all of you. If they know that this change is for the best, then they will understand. So if you changed for the better and these people leave --- good riddance! You get to keep those that are really true until the end.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: BANISHING THE GHOST OF OUR PAST MISTAKES

We've all done embarrassing things in our lives --- the type that we want to take back and wish we haven’t done. Unfortunately, our past self has passed the baton to the present one and the funny part is that she just said, “Deal with it.”

So what do we do, after all the damages are done? How do we survive that moment that we wish we could have handled differently?

This question haunted me last night. It saddened me, knowing that I can’t take it back. But that is the point --- we can’t take it back. What we can do though is divert the results of those actions to better things. Like turning those mistakes into wisdom that we shall carry on to the future as we deal with life once again. Because life doesn't stop for anyone and we deserve to live it.

In my case, I should have been more polite and mature in dealing with things that is obviously trivial. Feeling vindicated is not an excuse to lose my mind and composure any given moment. And although in my book, I have handled it better than before, I wish that I could have been more loving than what I did. I slipped at some points, but in the good side, I was better than before.

So to my dear sisters in fashion, take comfort in the fact that we have all done things that we are not proud of. But what we can take pride in is how we banish those ghosts of our past mistakes by seeing how we became better from it. These ghosts will always pop in every now and then but it is to remind us of the lessons that we should be practicing in the present.

PLUS SIZE LOVE: “BE FIERCE AND MOVE ON”

As if, we need to remind Erzulliestas about this, right?

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE LIFE: “THE BLOSSOMING”

The dream is starting to blossom, Erzulliestas! It’s coming together, finally. We just moved our stuff in and the basics are there. Now, we just have to make an environment fit for the fierce plus size women that are about to walk through that door.

I am calling this entry, “the blossoming” because I feel that Erzullie is finally opening up to greater possibilities as plus size fashion brand. We have been “planting” this dream for more than 3 years now and we really feel grateful that this room has been given to us, despite the challenges it had. We finally have a place where Erzulliestas can go, feel fierce and shop for their style.

Needless to say, it's fantastic to watch your dreams blossom in front of you.

Now as we are slowly getting ready for the great housewarming party (details to be announced soon), we feel very blessed to see this dream blossom in front of us. We hope of course, that you ladies will love what we did and find it to be your second closet or home --- whichever you want to view it.

Cheers to that!

Aries
