PLUS SIZE OPINION: CAN WE STILL TRUST (THE PHOTOS INSIDE) MAGAZINES FOR THE REALITY OF BEAUTY?

PHOTO FROM: THEILLUSIONISTS.ORG

This photo is going around Facebook. It's actually from the Facebook page "The Illusionist". It basically shows the celebrity, Jennifer Lawrence, an actress of strong athletic physique, being "slimmed down" or rather "shrunk down" a size or three. Before the plus size community or any body acceptance promoter raise their eyebrows to GQ and start clamoring for reforms, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT GQ ACTUALLY CHOSE THE LEFT PHOTO for publishing.

So please, CALM DOWN. GQ deserves a round of applause for many ages to come. This photo is also almost 2 years of age, so the issue has practically been brought up already but it just reached me yesterday.

In the magazine world, it's already a widespread fact that PHOTOSHOP is always used in these forms of media. One way or another, we are sure that this program has been used in any or almost all photos shown in the newsstands (digitally or the old school paper stands). So the question is, can we still trust magazines with regards to the reality of beauty?

This topic, of course, has been ran over and over again. In fact, there has been a clamor from various groups to "tone it down". Unfortunately, it can't be helped. Magazines use it because majority of their readers actually/secretly gets attracted to it more. People who do buy these magazines, get attracted because the magazine, over the years, has been the voice they have been listening to for years and they trust them with regards to beauty/fashion/style. So, this conundrum is a definite chicken and egg style.

But with the appearance of this kind of evidence, GQ finally making a great choice of actually just showcasing the photo as is because, let's face it, Jennifer Lawrence, is already beautiful as is, can there still be hope that we can still trust magazines for their point of view about beauty?

Personally, I think that we should just think of these magazines as art or hyper reality. Even if the photo is not photoshopped, we should take it upon ourselves to STOP COMPARING ourselves to these photos. We will never be these people. We can only be ourselves. We can't immediately stop these magazines from using these kinds of photos, but we can immediately stop ourselves from believing that these photos should be who we are.

We can only be one beautiful person and the REALITY of beauty is that, that person is not found on the pages of that magazine, but in the acceptance of the body that is holding it.

What do you think, Erzulliestas? CAN WE STILL TRUST (THE PHOTOS INSIDE) MAGAZINES FOR THE REALITY OF BEAUTY? COMMENT HERE.

Cheers!

THE ERZULLIESTA: MARCH 2013 (4)

In case you have missed it, here is the Erzulliesta week in review:

(#1) The last Then&Now Editorial is out! It features plus size model and Erzullie Icon, Loren Monares. See how this model transformed from being a nervous curvy to the smoldering high plus size fashion model that she is today.

(#2) We asked you Erzulliestas what do you think of Erzullie "possibly" being in Rustan's in the future? Yay or Nay? Read more of your sisters in fashion's reactions here. Feel free to put in your respectful and loving two cents in there.

(#3) We are still under the rule of the Corporate 2013 collection. Want to know to whom was this collection dedicated to? Click here for the long and short of it.

(#4) A little explanation on one of the best sellers of the Erzullie Corporate 2013 collection --- the white synthetic wool drop collared blazer. It's also available online should you want to purchase it.

(#5) We know that some Erzulliestas love a good party. If you are looking for something to heat up the first week of your April, here is the "Beach In The City" party to be held in Prime Upscale Clubbing in Tomas Morato. Shake your booty, have a blast and drink (responsibly), ladies!

(#6) 3/4 sleeves in the summer? It's so hot though! Not with this Corporate 2013 top! It's light fabrics will keep you looking office appropriate and cool during these coming tropical days. Click here to view.

(#7) The Erzullie First Look: Resort 2013 event announcement is finally released! This is an exclusive event for all Erzulliestas who want to socialize with their other sisters in fashion and wishes to purchase the Resort 2013 collection before anyone else does. So if you want to attend one of the most glamorous plus size events this summer, we suggest that you get your pre-vites today! Click here to find out more.

(#8) A photo is making rounds in the plus size community. It's also creating a controversy because some say it's obese. Some are saying that it's just right. It's again the battle of whether or not it's plus size or unhealthy. Here in Erzullie though we are tackling the issue in a different perspective. Should we have mannequins that represent the majority of us?

(#9) The Erzullie signature item --- maxi pants had made a comeback this Corporate 2013 collection. It's paired with a new twist on the blazer --- the continuous collar. Click here to view the fabulosity.

(#10) The Erzullie Corporate 2013 collection was featured by blogger, Gellie Abogado. (Thank you again, Miss Gellie!) She also wrote her view about the collection and of course our gorgeous plus size model and Erzullie Icons, Katrina Catapia and Audrey Lee. Congratulations girls!

(#11) SPOT THE ERZULLIESTA! We are very proud of Erzullie Personal Shopper, Apple Pueblo, being featured in Kusina Master. Should you know, she is also a chef! Beauty, brains and curves? Apple has it going.

So that's the week's wrap!

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: SQUARE PANTS + CONTINUOUS COLLARED BLAZER (CORPORATE 2013)

If there is one thing that Erzullie is known for, it is the wide legged pants. Erzulliestas love both the comfort and effortless chic that it brings. Also it applies more than just one part of their lives. The right solid colored wide legged bottom can transform from day to night, casual to formal, work to party at any time. It can also transfer from one season to another. No wonder Erzulliestas have loved this signature bottom of ours.

Every year, we try to re-invent the wide legged pants. This collection, Corporate 2013, I have added some details that would improve it a little. The pants have a soft tummy control action, while the soft pleat detailing on the front of the abdomen gives it elongation and structure.

So if you are looking for something that would flatter your curves and can translate from almost any part of your life until it is fully exhausted, then by all means get this bottom!

The Corporate 2013 collection is also all about the blazers. I wanted to do something different and for this one. The continuous collar goes from neck down to the hips. This helps balance out the whole body and create that visual hour glass figure. So whether or not you have wide shoulders or hips, this blazer is the right tool to get you into that professional curvy image.

Visit our digital flagship for more details.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE OPINION: SHOULD WE HAVE MANNEQUINS THAT REPRESENT THE MAJORITY OF US?

PHOTO FROM: BECKA.NU

THIS PHOTO has been going around the global plus size community for some time. I was supposed to blog about it last Monday but I figured that there might be more. I have first seen it in the news feed of PLUS MODEL MAGAZINE if I am not mistaken. The question was (as far as I remember) "People are clamoring that this mannequin be removed because it is a bad example for people with regards to obesity. What do you think?"

I actually said "People need to calm down. It's a mannequin. It's used to show that this store also has bigger sizes than the usual. Geez."

And so after that, I have let it go then I saw it in this article of the Business of Fashion (Click here for the full article). It was through that that I was able to find out more. Apparently, this was taken in a department store in Ã…hléns, Sweden. After further research, it also turns out that it is the only department store in the area that actually showcases this kind of mannequin (click here for the full article) and MIND YOU it's a size 6. Basically it shows the most common dress size in Sweden.

So after that, the debates started to vary about the photo.

DEBATE 1: IS IT PLUS SIZE?

DEBATE 2: IS IT AN EXAMPLE OF OBESITY?

DEBATE 3: SHOULD MORE STORES HAVE THIS KIND OF DISPLAY METHOD? (DISPLAYING THE MOST COMMON DRESS SIZE IN A COUNTRY?)

As a plus size designer, I don't want to go in too deep with the first two debates. I feel that I will just be repeating myself over and over. Gah. Who would like that? No one. So let's proceed to the THIRD DEBATE ---Should more stores have this kind of display method? Displaying the most common dress size in their country?

I SAY... YES! I think that this would actually help all of womanity in general, specifically in shopping. It's easier to shop with this type of mannequin around. The display can actually help the shopper instantly spot if this clothing carries their size or bigger. Let's all face it, MAJORITY OF US ARE NOT SIZE ZERO, get over it. How many times have you had that experience that you fell in love with this dress and then you go in the store all excited only to find out that it does not carry your size? Now imagine doing that 10 TIMES IN A ROW finding the perfect dress for that formal outfit you are about to go through. TIRING as hell, right? Having a mannequin like this could easily help the shopper spot her options. It's as easy as that.

Also, it would help the customer decide if it the clothing is worth the 'try out'. Since it is in a more realistic setting, the mannequin is already giving a more specific look on what the shopper may look like, if she tries it on. This cuts the shopping decision in half! Remember, expectations and reality sometimes vary. This mannequin can help people decide.

So how about you, Erzulliesta? Should more stores have a mannequin that display the most common dress size in a country? COMMENT HERE.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: PLUS SIZE TOP (CORPORATE 2013)

As much as we would always like to go sleeveless in the office, more often than not in the high corporate setting, sleeves are a must. However, at times, our tropical weather can make that a bit of a challenge.

That is why, when I made this black and white fading, draped, 3/4 sleeve top, I have made sure that it provided both coverage and breathing room for your body. The Ceneffa Top is light and airy but is not see through and with the body draping details it actually enhances your curves.

I also like both the casual and conservative feel of the design. It can translate from casual Fridays to your boardroom meetings in no time.

Want to get yours? Click HERE.

PLUS SIZE FASHION: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT (CORPORATE 2013)

I was making a catalog today for a possible project and well, this just struck me.

I actually learned this from Michael Kors that when you make a fashion catalog, you give a short introduction about your current collection.

Well, there it is, Erzulliestas. Mind you, it's dedicated to any form of career path you girls may choose. Erzullie will be the only place where there is only acceptance.

PLUS SIZE EDITORIAL: THEN AND NOW III

For your viewing pleasure, Erzulliestas.

The last installment of the Then & Now editorial featuring Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Loren Monares.

This woman was already confident even before her first plus size model go see. During the first photo shoot though, she was still a little bit nervous. I can tell. She was still learning to use her curves to their most powerful extent. It was the Resort 2013 back then. However, the Erzulliestas love her so much, we just had to get her back again for 2 more collections! (Pre-Holiday and Holiday 2012)

During those times, it was hard training. We were working with a new photographer, Mark Alvarez, and with me (Aries) directing the shoot, the pressure and the actual directions of the look are harder. Although it was difficult, Loren handled it with grace and poise. It was her eagerness to learn and to make her self better as a model that pushed her to make the beautiful photos that she has now.

Then comes the Anniversary shoot. This was more daring and obviously, unorthodox. I was actually worried that none of my models would answer for it --- specifically Loren, but she did. She even took the challenge in a lighter note. It was the same photographer but different make up artist. However, this time, I know... it was confidence, unleashed.

Then: It was the potential.
Now: It is Loren Monares.

Cheers!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: (CORPORATE 2013) BLUE+MOCHA BLOUSE WITH 3/4 SLEEVES

Look sleek, stylish and modern in the office with this Blue and Mocha combination, 3/4 sleeve top!

When I have designed this top, I wanted something that would help smooth out the side curves and create that visual illusion of a waist line. The conservative scoop neck gives you that modern and classic feel, while the 3/4 length sleeve gives it that conservatism and professional look.

I also wanted something that can translate from office to a casual look with just a switch of the bottom. In the office, you can wear it with slacks or a black pencil skirt and your choice of blazer. Going out? Switch to slim cut jeans or any type of jeans that flatters your body perfectly. You can opt the blazer out or if you still want, you can just fold it up w/ the top for a more relaxed vibe.

Love this? Want to order one? Click here to see more about the product and order it online. (Our digital flagship: http://erzullie.wix.com/shop is online to serve you!

MY FIERCE EXPERIENCE: THE PHOTO SHOOT

Do what you love and love what you do. (is there even such a saying?)

Ms. Aries keeps on asking me every time I’m done with doing something for Erzullie, “Timmy, how’s your experience so far?” Even though I’m so tired na; I always answer her with the same reply, “Im fine Ms.Aries, I’m having fun!”.

Really, I am truly and sincerely having fun with what I do; I looove what I do! I know that she’s just checking if I’m still doing fine with the tasks, but there’s really nothing else I can say about it.(parang love ba, you just can’t describe it. Haha!) Maybe next time Ms. Aries asks me, I’ll add the words funtabulous or amazeballs to better express how I feel. =)))

I truly didn’t feel that I was working 7 hours straight during the photo shoot for the Corporate and Resort collection. I just felt super exhausted when I got home. (And really craving for a diet coke float) =)

During the photoshoot, I got to fulfil my life-long dream to be a Stylist. Yey!

I got to style the models by assisting them through the fitting and made sure they looked camera ready. I felt like I was styling my life size FULL-FIGURED dolls. To be honest, I don’t know anything about styling. Are there even any rules when it comes to style?

I just used some techniques that I learned from Art school like Balance, symmetry and opposition and made sure that the right accessories made the look complete; Simple!

So.. What I learned from this experience:

First, I learned that desperate times call for desperate measures; (learned this in a very pricey way) having the need to check-in in a hotel just to do hair and make-up. To make the long story, short; there was an issue with the general schedule so we had to do our hair and makeup somewhere else.

Second, It’s more fun to be the model rather than be the ones behind the camera! I realized that, even though it’s very hard to model (I’ve actually seen women starve themselves just to get a job). The feeling in front of the camera is truly very surreal. I’ll admit it, naingit ako sa kanila. Maybe next time I’ll apply as a model after this internship. Ha!

Lastly, (I didn’t learn 3 things lang ha! I just think the other things are more situational than the others and you really have to experience it for yourself talaga). I’ll repeat what I said earlier, Do what you love and love what you do. Whatever happens, don’t let anything/anyone stop you from doing what you love. If you really have the “passion for fashion”.. GORA!

See you on the runways.

X,

Timmy

P.S. Here are more BTS photos =)

PLUS SIZE FASHION: ERZULLIE CORPORATE 2013 CAMPAIGN I

Presenting the 1st photo of the campaign for the Erzullie Plus Size Corporate 2013 collection. This is dedicated to all the Alpha Female Erzulliestas out there. Love what you do and do it with passion and fierceness!

Cheers!

Aries

P.S. Corporate 2013 collection will be available online by next week. We will update you girls.

PLUS SIZE FASHION: A LITTLE WORD ON CORPORATE 2013 (THE JOURNEY ON HOW IT CAME TO BE)

Yes. I know. I keep on having "words" about the Erzullie Plus Size Corporate 2013 collection. It has already been released earlier this March. Now the Erzulliestas are just clamoring for it ONLINE.

I mean, even my mind is saying it ... --- JUST RELEASE IT ALREADY, damn!

Before we do, and I promise we will, I would just like to share a few good words with regards to the Corporate 2013 collection.

The reason it was born was mainly because a lot of Erzulliestas have been asking for it and the first woman that ever did ask for it was our dear Erzulliesta, Rocky Lim (aka swankywoman). I was interested with the idea because it is true, all of Erzulliestas are fierce career woman (no matter what path they have chosen). Why not design a fierce corporate attire for them?

At first, the theme was supposed to be "Makati City". I remember seeing this photo in Facebook. It showed a city that looked like New York and then it mentioned "New York? No. It's Makati City." And I am like, yeah. Makati City is the New York City of the Philippines (although some may disagree, I respect that but for the purposes of my view, please... just give this to me.) I was also initially inspired by plus size model and blogger, Jhaki David at that time. She had this photo of her hair up in a bun and she had sunglasses on.

How chic!

I wanted that to be the theme of the Corporate 2013. I wanted to have the Urban Jungle vibe. I was drawing leopard prints, bright colors with some nudes. I was sketching long trench coats, pencil skirts, button down tops and so on. But then, the Holiday Bazaar came in and the Erzulliestas were requesting that our blazers be longer but not that long. They were also requesting for some tops that can transpire from work to play and back and forth. I have looked at my sketches and I was like ... "This is not good enough."

I have tried a different approach on the collection but unfortunately it ended up just wrong. Everything that I sketch is something that is "common" (and Erzulliestas are everything but common) or something that I have seen before (and why would my Erzulliestas buy something form us that they have already seen elsewhere?) I needed something fresh. I needed something new. I needed a perspective that would say --- "Ah Aries! Erzullie has done it again!"

And so, I went back to square one. I went back to Ms. Rocky Lim, the Erzulliesta that rolled the ball with regards to this collection and really kept me on track by regularly checking on me about it whenever we meet. Lol. I was thinking, "What would Ms. Rocky wear to work?" Since she is an Erzulliesta with a (high profile) job, I wonder what she would look like at work in "fierce mode".

And then it hit me --- ALPHA FEMALE. My Erzulliestas are all Alpha Females. They are at the head of their game. They are the queen of their cubicles. They are the goddesses of their businesses/blogs/hobbies/family etc. They are the ALPHA FEMALES.

Then I have started to sketch again but to no avail. The sketches are not "Alpha Female" enough. Then it was time for cloth shopping and that is where the pure inspiration came from. There were no sketches but the theme helped me choose the fabrics, which later on determined the looks and style of each design. I absolutely love it. We have discovered fabrics that we have not used before and we haven't seen used on a plus size clothing locally. So here we are.... The Corporate 2013 collection.

During production, we make it a point that we really consider the final price of the product. You know us girls, we try very hard to keep it within the range of Php 480-1,000.00 as much as possible but in the past collections, we have reached around Php 1,200.00 I think. This time, because of the fabric and the construction, I was a little nervous because the maximum range has now reached Php 1,370.00. I was thinking if the Erzulliestas would find it worthy of its price. But I know my Erzulliestas, once they see the quality of the craftsmanship on every piece of design and the high quality fabrics used, we know they will see that it's worth the price.

Then the public launching happened this March for the Corporate 2013. I was surprised that the ones that were priced at the maximum range was almost sold out by the end of the 3 day sale. It was amazing for us. I am so happy that Erzulliestas went there and actually appreciated what we did. Thank you so much again, for making that happen.

But wait, the journey is not yet over. The Corporate 2013 collection is supposed to be launched online. With that, of course, we still have to shoot the campaigns/editorials of the Brand for Corporate 2013. Not only that but it is now in conjunction with the Resort 2013 timeline. Oh dear... what to do. To view the panic? Click here. But like every reality series out there, everything went well in the end. Click here to view the BTS photos of both Corporate and Resort 2013 photo shoot.

So now, here we are few hours before we post the editorials, one by one and soon enough it will be available online, I hope that you girls will be able to love it as much as I did. The journey was crazy but because of my main inspiration --- you, Erzulliestas --- and the confidence you have --- I was able to push through.

Lots of love and gratitude for everyone.

Cheers!

Aries

P.S. Berna and I would like to thank the Erzullie Team --- Mark Alvarez, Azaza Rodriguez, Katrina Catapia and Audrey Ann Lee for making this particular photo shoot to happen, as well as Rouge Studio, for being the place where we do the magic. Love for everyone!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: CORPORATE AND RESORT 2013 PHOTO SHOOT (BEHIND THE SCENES)

PLUS SIZE MODEL, AUDREY LEE, POSING FOR A PLUS SIZE EDITORIAL

Yesterday, March 9, 2013, Erzullie had the photoshoot for both Corporate and Resort 2013 collections. We are very happy to say that we are launching the Resort 2013 collection privately. Details are to follow. For now, here are some of the details about the shoot

Plus size models present were Katrina Catapia, Loren Monares, Audrey Lee and Kat Lopez. Hair Stylist is Erzullie designer and co-owner, Berna Cuevas, while make up artist is our fierce Erzulliesta, Azaza Rodriguez. Of course, where would our shoot be without our high fashion photographer, Mark Alvarez? And of course, the day would not be complete, without the help of our fashion intern, Timmy Mariano (mind you, she also styled some of the models during the shoot). Our shoot was again done in Rouge Studio, Ortigas Center. The theme of the Corporate 2013 is Alpha Female while for the Resort 2013 it's Saharan Glamour.

Here are some BTS photos of the Corporate and Resort 2013 collections:
