PLUS SIZE POWER: SPENDING AND SELF-LOVE

B and I went to a shoe store last time. My trusty, silver metallic Cotton-On flats were already tattered and clamouring for a dignified burial and replacement, but I am yet to find the worthy pair of shoes to replace it. I saw a couple of shoes that I loved. The quality was high and the price was slashed. I put them down and debated in my head.

“Maybe I can use these flats for 1 more month before I buy a new one.” I thought. I even voiced them out to B. She just looked at me dumbfounded.

Then, I saw these amazing leather boots in size 9 and I thought of Carol (one of my longest friends, Erzullie Icon, Plus Size Model and hair and make-up goddess). I told B:
“I want to buy this for Carol. It’s on sale. She will love this.”

Berna looked at me sternly, “Really dude? But you are debating right now whether or not you should buy those two flats to replace the one that is begging to be let go of?”
From that, it hit me --- why am I so quick to spend on my friends, but when it comes to me, I feel guilty about it?

As I placed those boots down, I started to explore the many reasons as to why I am actually like that.

Days went by, when suddenly another obstacle presented itself. There was a need of big amount of cash and fast! I had half a mind of saying “NO”, but I don’t know why my heart was saying, “Yes please. Give the money”.

And so I did and to be honest --- after I did it, I felt bad about it. Although the money will indeed be given back to me sooner or later, one way or another, I can’t shake the feeling that I was back to my old ways again.

I was saying to myself --- here I am again. I am back with the habit of “SPENDING ON OTHERS AND NOT SPENDING ON MYSELF.”

Needless to say, I have kept on playing the moment leading up to me giving that money. Then it hit me. That moment when this person was explaining the situation to me --- her head lowered to the floor, almost to a bow. Her shoulders folded in. Her back curved downwards. Her eyes on the verge of tears.

All these things were familiar to me --- too familiar. It morphed into the memory of my mother back in the day when she would ask money from her friends and family. The amount of shame that she had during those times. She had to do all these begging just to put food on our plate and continue our education.

There came a point that no one would be able to. And when I saw her long face --- sad and defeated, I reached out from that can of money I had from the allowance she gave me and I gave it all to her. Her face lit up. She didn’t know that I was saving up all that time and for me, I also didn’t know that it was called “savings”.

We ended up having dinner that night. A dinner that was long overdue. My mother was happy. I saw the way that she looked and for the first time a young girl like me, absolutely helped around the house.

It is with that memory that I have realized why I spend (at times, beyond my means) on my friends and love ones so quickly. It’s because I don’t want to see that face again. I don’t want anyone that I love feel that shame, guilt, desperation and desolation. As much as I can, I would like to prevent that.
And so, even way before my friend/love one needed something, I would already put a band aid on it. Just to never see that face again.

I also want to change my view and people’s view of a creditor. You see, when my mother begged to borrow money from other people, when she couldn’t pay them back immediately, they publicly took our stuff.

I would remember people going to our house and taking our appliances and possessions one by one. Our neighbors watched on. I can remember the way they whispered to one another. It was just us being publicly shamed over and over.

And so, as a creditor, I don’t want to be like that. I vowed to be the good kind of creditor but as such, I only give to those who really need and deserve it. I want to make people feel unashamed for not having enough right now and asking for just the basics.

That is why I am always quick to say yes on spending on my friends and loved ones. I love them and I don’t want anyone to go through that feeling of shame ever again.

So now, I turn to the other half. Why is it always so hard to spend on myself?

For days, I have explored on this matter.  But I guess I have to be open and honest now. After my mother died and we were back on our feet financially as a family, I got a job. With that job, came a pay check. And finally, I have financial freedom that is just sitting there and I didn’t know what to do with it.

And so, I said to myself, I have deprived myself with luxury for so long, I have decided to say --- “I love myself. I deserve it all.”

I deserve these shoes. Ding! Goes the cashier.

I deserve these clothes. Swipe! Goes the credit card.

I deserve these bags. Zip! Goes the wallet.

I deserve that expensive travel. Beep! Goes the online travel site.

So on and so forth.

And you know what comes after maxing out your cards? Bills. Bills with high card interest rates. And if you don’t have the money to pay for them in full immediately, it’s going to be more when it comes back.

And at that time, I spent more than I earned. Thinking that I can devote my whole pay check to the next bill anyway. Little did I know I was trapping myself more and it was indeed becoming harder and harder for me to get out off.

It came to the point that I was living off my credit card, which is not really a great route to go. I was trying to pay it off and for me to use it to continue my life, is like putting in water in a pail that you are desperately trying to empty.

The bills became overwhelming. I find myself asking, “how can loving yourself and giving yourself what you deserve be so expensive?” It feels like loving yourself is also punishing yourself. How can a paradox happen?

As hard as it was, I knew that I needed a major money make-over. So I did what every independent woman would do --- face the facts, forgive the self and heal it with all my might.

I left my credit cards at home. I have changed my whole lifestyle. I started dedicating big amounts of my pay check to paying off all of my credit cards. Soon enough, I have a clean slate.

If you must know, this happened to me thrice in different times and ways. And I have definitely learned. I have definitely grown. And as of writing, right now, because of Barri Tessler’s The Art of Money, I am now living the healing journey of my relationship with money.

In this path, I have realized that what went wrong is that I did not REALLY know what do I really want to deserve in the first place.

THE KEYWORD IS “WANT”.

I mean, of course I deserve it all. I work hard for my money. I am a great woman. Great things should be with me. But then again, not every good thing will please and nourish me. It’s really about being honest with yourself and asking, “Do I really want this?”

I treat myself like a goddess but as a goddess, what kind of offerings do I really want?

Did I really want that shoes that I just bought? Did I really want that bag that I just purchased? Did I really want that jewellery that I just got? Did that expensive travel to that island for my 30th birthday please me? (Yes by the way ONLY on the last one).

And as years passed by and I went on to heal my money ---  I have become more aware of myself and what I really wanted to deserve. This has become a source of a new empowerment tool for me.

No longer will material things tell me what I deserve, but now I have accepted my power to dictate on the material things --- Do I really want them and do they deserve to belong in the roster of my possessions?

I have realized at this point that the reason that I buy less and become strict with regards to me spending on myself is that the things that I actually do buy are the things that I know are absolutely necessary for me.

It’s not that I don’t love myself. I just know that I can live without it.

I am actually a firm believer that everything else that I need is already inside or with me. This actually broke the shackles and the hold of materialism on me. This is not to say that I reject all forms of materialism. I am human. I live in a physical world and with that, I need materials to live and create.

But I have to remind myself that these materials have to prove that they deserve me. I hold the money. I hold the power in this situation. Not the other way around. So if ever I do have to buy and get things, I have to make sure that I really want it and IT DESERVES ME.

With this in mind, I have realized that I should be kind whenever I would tell myself “no” in buying stuff. It’s not because I was being “stringy” or “not loving” myself. It’s because I am now currently learning what really deserves me and my money.

If you must know, I did end up buying those 2 flats instead of the boots that I think Carol would have been delighted of.

For one thing, I know that Carol does not have that face of despair for a pair of boots she is not even aware of.

And the second thing? I do know that these flats deserve to be with me and they are worth my time, style and money. They are high quality and in great price. These flats will serve me well for a long time and because they were made that way, they deserve to be bought by me. And that is how you reconcile spending with self-love.

PLUS SIZE POWER: THE MADNESS OF INDEPENDENCE

I HAVE THREE JOBS because I can and I love making money off my specific set of skills. And it’s with the causality of these actions, do I find myself being able to live and function in this planet.

Destiny’s Child said it, “Ladies it ain’t easy being independent.” --- and boy were they right. If you want to fully support yourself, you really should know the fact that it costs a lot. In fact, you are supposed to “earn that lot and more” to survive and thrive in this world.

So before you paint me in your head as this woman of the “Sex and The City” kind of variety --- I want to tell you there are times that it gets too much and I feel like my head is about to explode, I freeze and do nothing.

There are days that I will find myself with 30 pending tasks plus the personal ones that I need to attend to. For a woman whose whole life was all about chanting the beauty of “self-love”, I find myself drowning in obligations, while my hair, body and face needed a wash and my spirit was crying desperately for me to just STOP.

I know. Gross.

But duty calls. I had to tick off tasks given to me by my boss, fulfill my obligation AS A BOSS and also cater to my clients. Aside from that, I also have to worry about other personal obligations to myself and my loved ones. All of which have HIGH LEVELS of priority.

And then this got me thinking --- how can I go on like this? Clearly, I can’t drop all of them and just let everything become a bigger mess. However, I am clearly stressed out to the point that I can’t move anymore. I just wanted to cry in the corner.

I tried looking for comfort from other people. All I got though was, “Awww… you’re stressed.” It frustrated me even more. That’s it? That’s all that I am going to get? But then again, why am I asking for another person to make things better for me?

Only I can make things better for me --- curse of an independent woman I guess. And the only way that I can make things better is if I get some rest.

And so amidst the chaos of my 30 (ghosts) tasks, I have decided to care for myself first. I took a shower and dressed up fierce. After that my tone was different. The feeling of helplessness was gone and I was able to finish majority of the tasks that I have.

It’s pretty amazing if you ask me.

And so for the women who are inspiring to be independent, be prepared to get down and dirty too. Being one seems fabulous but it requires a lot of inner strength to pull through. Being independent means that you can only really depend on yourself. So you have to ask the question --- are you ready to give YOUR SELF --- your all?

PLUS SIZE FASHION: IT'S GOING TO BE A TOUGH #TNEI2017

And then... there were 6.

Truth be told, we received around 1,200 plus applications this year. As I have said before as well, that gets cut into half immediately because not a lot of models know how to follow instructions. And of course, I have to be fair with the models who did follow. Then after requirements screening, it dwindles down to a quarter. Then I screen the forms even more and we get to the Top 50.

Out of the Top 50, there were 15 slots and out of that only 6 came in for the go-see.

I am going to tell you though, this batch is tough. Tough in the sense that I know these girls really want to be an Icon, understands what it means and is passionate about the fashion we produce. They are not going to go down without a fight. These are 5 full-blood Erzulliestas and 1 newbie. Don't let the newbie fool you though, I got a feeling that she also has a trick up her sleeve to surprise me.

After the go-see, the panel (Erzullie Icons and Plus Size Models, Loren Monares and Chezka Santos were with me, Berna Cuevas and our Marketing Assistant, Dale Villegas) had a discussion about each model and everyone has their own view and perspective about each, it's hard to make a solid conclusion on who should get a slot for the Trial Modeling Project.

But I guess time and the actions of the models will tell and of course, YOU ladies.

PLUS SIZE MODEL: CHEZKA SANTOS | A SIGNATURE OF HER OWN

Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model Chezka Santos becomes the face of the latest Erzullie Corporate 2017 collection. From being a self-confessed "fan girl" she now graduates and becomes a model with her own brand signature --- sweet and bright in the outside, but dark and deep from within.

But all of this did not come without the struggle. Here she is opening up how she bagged her first official collection and what did she do to nail it.

1. Congratulations! You have been chosen to be the model for the Corporate 2017 collection! How do you feel?

When I knew that I am the chosen model for Corporate 2017, my initial reaction was "Seriously?? Paano??" Hahaha. I just can’t believe it really. The moment I knew that I will lead Corporate 2017, I told myself, "Ok Chezka, this is it... You have to be ready".

This is going to be my first collection, it's a make or break project. I have to make sure I'll come in well-prepared. But at the same time, I didn’t even know what to do since it's my first time. So when they provided the concept of the shoot, I have practiced right away. I even listened to the music that will be used during the shoot. As early as that day, I felt like I needed to be in character so when the day of shoot comes, everything will just come out naturally.

2. Why do you think you were picked out of the whole roster?

To be honest, until now, I can’t believe that Im the one chosen for the Corporate 2017 collection. But I believe the theme they thought of having for this collection matched the aura that I have right now. 

I also felt it, that there's something in me that changed. I used to be shy or probably intimidated whenever I do OOTD shoots before, but this year, I felt different. I felt that I don’t have to be intimidated as each and every one of has our own style, personality, strength. Well maybe I can say that 2017 is my year--- work wise, modeling career wise… everything. I’m just so thankful to God for everything.

3. What did you think of the collection so far? Why so?

Right after the fitting day, I can’t forget about the collection! I can’t move on! Haha

It may sound cliché but I fell in love with it.

Every single piece, I felt like it looks good on me. Kidding aside, yeah I fell in love with the entire collection. I wanted to have each and every piece of it. 

4. If you were not chosen as the Corporate 2017 model, who do you think would be the next best bet and why?

If I were not chosen as the Corporate 2017 model, I guess the next best bet would be Audrey Lee. Reason why I thought so is because I had same fitting day as her. All the pieces look fabulous as she wore it. 

Audrey also is known as a strong, successful career woman and it’s just sooo natural for her to showcase such type of collection. She's gorgeous, fierce, definitely a woman of class.

5. What were your thoughts before the day itself? Why so?

So after the announcement, I got soooo excited mainly because I really wanted to do that type of shoot. Strong, vampire-like, dark. I don’t know but whenever I see photos with that peg, I feel empowered. Seems like there's something within me that needs to be pulled out. Like I’m like a new-born vampire who needs to feed her thirst.

Given those facts, the pressure was all on me again, before that big day, I prayed a lot that I will be able to execute what I practiced for. I prayed and hoped that I will be able execute the right attitude needed for the theme. Well bottomline is it was sooo nerve wrecking - that's even worst than what I felt when I had my 1st date. Haha

6. How did the shoot go for you? Why so?

Honestly, I didn’t know how collection shoot goes since this is my first time.

I was tooo excited, first because of the look that I will have that day. Z and Ms. B (Zaza Rodriguez and Berna Cuevas) was able to enhance my beauty again and they did a pretty good job! While they are fixing my look for the shoot, the music is playing in the background getting everyone in the mood. 

Actually it really helped a lot coz while I am hearing the background music and they are doing my hair and make-up. I felt like I’m a vampire and there's something within me that wants to come out. I felt like I wanted to scream! For me, that’s totally the reason why the shoot went well.

One of my most favorite part of the shoot was whenever they are styling me. It’s memorable for me because I was so amazed on how ideas flow. Those people around me can think in just a snap and ideas are actually great and awesome! 

Also, I really want to commend the entire Erzullie team. Why? Well mainly because they were the only bunch of people I know with great creativity, team work and oh yeah great humor!

7. What were you thoughts about the photoshoot experience AFTER? Why so?

I can’t move on… haha. I can still remember each and every single thing happened during the shoot. There's this "kilig" inside of me, I’m just so proud of the team for pulling up a very successful shoot.

I’m so thankful that I was the one chosen. I felt so great! I’m just so excited to see the fruit of our labor, I can’t wait for the success of this collection.

8. Messages to the Erzulliestas

Fellow Erzulliestas, always remember that great things happen in your own perfect time. This is applicable in all aspects of life. If there are things that’s not working out the way you wanted it to be, it may not be the time yet. Be patient, don’t lose hope, pray and work hard for it. God will give you your best rewards in His perfect time. 

Continue to be a blessing to others. Love yourself and show the world what our curves can do... Rock on Erzulliesta!

PLUS SIZE FASHION: THOUGHTS ABOUT #TNEI2017

It's the night before #TNEI2017. Usually, I would blog about any major event, but things have been different lately and I was not able to follow tradition. So this time, it's a good thing that I am able.

What can I say?

I am nervous as usual. Finding the next Erzullie Icon is never easy and it gets tougher by the year.

We always get around 1,000 plus applications EVERY YEAR, but not all of them make the cut because of the following:

1. They don't know how to follow instructions (and I have to be fair with the rest of the models who did)

2. They don't fit the requirements

4. My personal "favorite" (sarcastic, of course) is that they already show specific attitudes that will definitely not fly within the family.

Majority of the time, the models cover all three, making elimination very easy. I am usually left with around 50 models, but there are only 15 slots. It's up to them if they want to go through with it.

So, expectations?

I expect these models to be at their professional best. I also expect them to be on-time and bring their Fierce game on. Why do I expect such a thing? Because they are amazing plus size women for starters --- there is something inside there to be expected.

That's basically it. Hopefully, we do find an Erzullie Icon. If not, there is always next year.

PLUS SIZE MODEL: 3 INDUSTRY SECRETS TO THE NEWBIES

#TNEI2017 is here and I just got inspired with all the questions being asked to us via our Facebook page with regards to Plus Size Modeling. Being in the industry for almost a decade, these are all from my experience as a client of plus size models. It's not the full and only bible. Okay? Hope it helps:

#1 RESPECT AND HUMILITY

The local plus size fashion industry is growing and let me tell you, it's a tight knit community. People generally know each other or at least aware of each other's existence.

Always put into mind to respect the models, photographers, stylists, designers etc. that were already in the industry BEFORE, DURING AND EVEN AFTER YOU. Why you ask? Because if you want to continue working in this industry, know that you are only as good as the reputation that you make. If you come off as arrogant and ignorant, then you know that LEGITIMATE work will dry up.

Even you won't work with an arrogant person now--- right?

Furthermore, let's say you have been around for years, building your own brand and then a newbie comes in WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE and starts claiming your reputation as his/her own and tells you that YOU KNOW NOTHING? How would you feel?

Respect and humility will always be in style in this industry.

#2 MODELING PAYMENTS

Modeling payments depend on the person/firm/brand you are working for. Some offer cash. Some offer in kind (clothes, coupons, photos, credits etc.). To be clear as well, we have a set terms of payment for all of our Erzullie Icons.

With regards to payment, it's all about your comfort zone. If you feel that you should get more, then by all means go get that bag. But if you feel that the offer is right and balanced, then get that bag too.

Point is a model is supposed to get paid one way or another. Just make sure that you secure that. Get things in writing (contract/terms and conditions) and read it thoroughly before signing. Google the people you are working for and be safe.

The main exceptions are --- model open shoots and workshops/class.

To put it simply, a model open shoot is like a pop-up Great Image. Sometimes, a photographer would open their doors at a specific date for any model (that fits their requirement) to be photographed. This is done by models to upgrade their portfolios or even to expand it. You are technically paying for the final/raw photos as well as hair/make-up and styling depending on the packages listed out.

A plus size model workshop is basically a small class taught by experts who did years in the industry already and actually have a vast and varying experience that you, yourself, can verify. Check the people involved in the workshop. If you can see their portfolio online and feel that they are what they say, then please give it a go. You are technically paying to be trained. You must be able to at least have a certificate or a photo out of it --- proving that you went through the workshop.

Point is --- the people holding the open shoot or workshop --- will immediately place in the post that there is a payment involved. It SHOULD NOT be posted as a "job offer/opportunity/vacancy" post. And you should also STILL get something out of it.

PLUS SIZE FASHION: HALF-WAY THERE

Can you believe it, Erzulliestas? We are more than half-way through the year! And before you panic and put yourself in a frenzy of “where did the time go?”, I just wanted to say that you are still here --- therefore you did your first half fiercely.

It has been a while since I have blogged personally here in Erzullie. As some of you may have noticed, the blog has been a bit systematic again. Mainly because I have also been focused on various activities in Erzullie and also I have found some projects that interested me a lot.

Needless to say, looking back at the first half of the year here in Erzullie, I think it wasn’t that bad at all. Erzullie has been highly productive and active, which I am grateful for.

The Resort and Corporate 2017 collection have been released and to great response. I am very happy that you Erzulliestas love it. I also love seeing you ladies tell me more of what you want and the things that you have always wanted to wear. I am definitely looking forward to serving you ladies even more in the future.

We are now headed to revealing the Pre-Holiday and Berna’s Signature collection soon. We are having a massive Erzulliesta party this August and if there are still some pieces left, we are definitely going to launch it publicly online as soon as possible.

After that it’s the Holiday and my signature collection. I am pretty excited about the signature collection because it is something that I absolutely want to wear myself. And if you girls have seen the Erzullie feed, I love the “lingerie-boheme” look. Hopefully, I capture that properly.

We are now open for applications for THE NEXT ERZULLIE ICON 2017. Please READ, RE-READ and UNDERSTAND THOROUGHLY before posting any questions. ANY QUESTIONS already answered by this post will no longer be entertained. We will also be very strict with regards to the applications to be fair with all of the models who will apply.

Step 1: READ THE REQUIREMENTS, THEN ANSWER AND SUBMIT THE #TNEI2017 APPLICATION FORM. Deadline is JULY 14, 2017.

Step 2: INVITES WILL BE RELEASED ON JULY 17, 2017. Check both your INBOX AND SPAM. If by 12 midnight of the said date, you did not receive any, there is always next year. Inquiries on whether or not they were invited, will not be entertained.

We are looking for HIGH FASHION FEMALE PLUS SIZE MODELS who will take the brand to the next level and have the following requirements:

HEIGHT: 5"0’ AND ABOVE

AGE: 18 YEARS OLD AND ABOVE

BUST: 40-57 INCHES

WAIST: 34-50 INCHES

HIPS: 43-60 INCHES

- Must naturally know and support Erzullie Fierce Plus Size Fashion as a brand and is willing to represent it. Having bought and worn Erzullie before or attended any Erzullie event is a plus.

- Must be able to wear sleeveless, tube, VERY high heeled shoes and shorts and open to other/various possible plus size model projects/editorials, do runway and/or high fashion still poses and all the requirements pertaining to it.

- Must have professional portfolio and is professional to work with BEFORE submitting the #TNEI2017 application form. We immediately disqualify applicants that send photos that are obviously just a “selfie” or any low quality photo.

- Must be open to set terms of payment and contract signing

Please read and re-read everything before you ask any questions. Any questions that have been answered by the FAQ’s and this post will not be replied to.

1) With regards to height, for now, this is what we need for the future projects. When it comes to the SIZES, you just need to have TWO (2) of the size requirements to be qualified.

If you are good with bust and waist, but beyond or below the requirement for the hips, that's okay.

If you are good with waist and hips, but beyond or below the requirement for the bust, that's okay.

If you are good with hips and bust, but beyond or below the requirement for the waist, that's okay.

If you are beyond or below the requirements of both bust and waist, but are okay with hips, that's NOT okay.

2) You must be 18 years old and above during the time you have answered and submitted the TNEI 2016 applications. If you are 17 and below during the said time, we won’t be able to accommodate your application due to the nature of projects at hand.

3) We really need models that are flexible in terms of modeling garments and is confident enough to wear sleeveless and tube.

4) We are open to both VETERANS AND SKILLED NEWBIES.

5) We will only cater applicants who have taken time to create a professional looking portfolio. Anything otherwise is immediately disqualified. We will only cater to those who have the minimum requirements (1 HEADSHOT AND 1 WHOLE BODY) to be fair to others who have exerted their effort in following it. NO PORTFOLIO, NO CONSIDERATION. You must have a portfolio BEFORE you submit the #TNEI2017 APPLICATION FORM.

6) Set terms of payment to be revealed when model is chosen for project.

7) We will only accept applications via the #TNEI2017 APPLICATION FORM ONLY. Only THE FIRST 15 models to confirm their slot on a given deadline (to be stated in the invite) will be entertained. Only then will they be given instructions on the process of the plus size model go-see. See above for schedule of go see and cut-offs. DO NOT APPLY IF YOU CANNOT GO TO THE SAID GO-SEE DATES.

8) To those who have sent their applications last year and still want to join this year, OF COURSE YOU CAN. You just have to follow and submit the requirements above.

9) We accept both employed and unemployed applicants. This is open to Philippine residents only. As long as you can travel to Manila for the obligations, it's okay.
