PLUS SIZE STYLE: “TROPICAL LEATHER”

Let’s be honest, we live in a tropical country --- leather is not really that much of a great choice when it comes to clothing (not unless you want to steam yourself from within). But a leather jacket is always so fierce and sleek! Who can resist looking like a tough girl?

So, what I did was to partner it with my favorite Erzullie cropped top and maxi pants. These two garments are light and cool in both silhouette and fabric. It balances out the heat factor. Then, I added a solid clutch bag, and a little bling of necklace and metallic strap sandals.

Truth be told, I was able to commute with this outfit, which for me is a huge breakthrough. I love wearing cropped tops but at times, going to the public with it has its own pro’s and con’s. You’ll never know what kind of character you will be able to meet out there, so I’d rather wear something that I can defend myself with, while reflecting my style.

PLUS SIZE LIFE: CHANGING CHUBBLY (CHAMI VIRAY ON THE CHANGES OF THE BRAND AND HER SELF)

Erzulliestas are always known to be very fierce when it comes to their careers and Chami Viray is no different. At 25 years old, this Erzulliesta is already wearing diverse career hats (think blogger, fashion designer and interior stylist) as she runs Chubbly, one of Manila’s top plus size fashion brands. Lately, the brand has been slowly changing directions and many are left wondering what led to it and what does it take to evolve a fashion line?

#1 First off, tell us something about Chubbly.

Aside from being a professional multi-tasker (laughs), I still have a regular office job as a finance and administration officer. Being in a corporate setting really sucks the life out of me, so I think of ways to get inspired and motivated.

Enter CHUBBLY (Chami, my nickname + the word Bubbly = CHUBBLY)! The brand was initially part of my final graduation project back in the School of Fashion and the Arts Design Institute. I get to be both the model and target market of my own brand, so I started it.

#2 So why change Chubbly?

Chubbly is a reflection of myself. Wherever I go or what I do, my brand adapts. I added a new career, so the brand needs to change too. Change is good. You just need to realize that you need it to become better.

Chubbly was solely about business and grades before, but as I took a breather and thought about the brand’s future, I wanted to have a personal relationship with the readers and connect with them. I wanted it to become a blog that can inspire and get people motivated because that’s how I do it in my life now. There’s more to life than doing things for the sake of money.

Also, I think people nowadays are too preoccupied with a lot of things that they don’t bother to sit back and relax and be grateful of the things around them. I think I’m still one of those people. So, I want to change that and spread that love and appreciation.

#3 So what’s in the process of changing Chubbly?

Chubbly is still a plus size brand. From its hip and younger youth vibe, I’m moving toward the modern, contemporary and elegant styles because that’s how I look and style myself nowadays.

I haven't really launched the 'rebirth' of Chubbly just yet. Everything is still raw and fresh on my mind.

But for now, I just re-organized my online shop and incorporated it on my blog. I want it to be more interactive and give people an idea on what it's like to be a Chubbly girl/woman --- Modern. Contemporary. Elegant. I'm pretty excited. I’m also trying to do more on Interiors and lots of DIY tips and tricks on the blog. I might have a new line coming up. So I’ll let you guys know once it’s settled.

You walk by and see this wonderful leopard trench coat jacket. The lining is perfect. The cut is supreme and greatest of all? IT’S IN YOUR SIZE. But before you open your wallet and closet doors to this probable new addition to your style family, here are 3 things to think about before you buy it:

#1 Is this really my style?

Probably one of the most important questions to ask. If you are all about showing who you are through your clothes, we suggest that you ask if this new love of yours is a fit to your actual style. If you can’t find anything else that you can pair it with, then DO RECONSIDER.

#2 Does it fit my lifestyle?

Consider your day to day activities, do you see yourself wearing this while you go about it? If not, then why consider it? Sure it looks good, but it will just gather dust in your closet and it’s just money that could have gone to something that serves you daily.

#3 Am I just attracted to the idea of what I would look like in it?

At times we see these things on the window and our imagination starts to roll on what could be. The question is --- is that future really you?

PLUS SIZE OPINION: ONE LOVE FOR PLUS SIZE EMPOWERMENT

In the plus size world, there are many messages being brought, but I do believe that they all say the same thing --- we are all beautiful and we deserve respect just like anyone else.

But of course, there will be times that we will find someone whom we cannot agree with. For me, the right way to go about it is to just respect the person’s views, while stating your own. It doesn’t even need to contradict. You just have to talk about it or opt  not to respond and find others that share your own views, instead.

Because isn’t this what the plus size advocacy is all about? We, plus size women, want to be heard as a viable part of society. In order to heard, we need to talk  about it or at least have someone do. Silencing another person is counterproductive. Because once the talk dies, that’s the end of the cause --- we are no longer heard.

So instead of stopping someone from doing what they think is right for the cause, respect it. Respect is about knowing the right time, words and actions to show your views about the matter and conveying them in the most thoughtful way possible. This way, we keep the conversation going.

We are all doing our best for the cause, ladies --- believe me. There are different lines of thoughts but we all have the goal of empowering plus size women in mind. So let’s just talk about our ideas instead and remind ourselves that in the end, we all have one love towards plus size empowerment.

PLUS SIZE LIFE: “THE BLOSSOMING”

The dream is starting to blossom, Erzulliestas! It’s coming together, finally. We just moved our stuff in and the basics are there. Now, we just have to make an environment fit for the fierce plus size women that are about to walk through that door.

I am calling this entry, “the blossoming” because I feel that Erzullie is finally opening up to greater possibilities as plus size fashion brand. We have been “planting” this dream for more than 3 years now and we really feel grateful that this room has been given to us, despite the challenges it had. We finally have a place where Erzulliestas can go, feel fierce and shop for their style.

Needless to say, it's fantastic to watch your dreams blossom in front of you.

Now as we are slowly getting ready for the great housewarming party (details to be announced soon), we feel very blessed to see this dream blossom in front of us. We hope of course, that you ladies will love what we did and find it to be your second closet or home --- whichever you want to view it.

PLUS SIZE TIP: MAKE YOUR CLOTHES LAST LONGER

No doubt we know you ladies love fashion and clothes. Even better, overtime, as you mold your style, you have developed favorites among all of the things that you have. So how do we make these favorites of ours last? Check out these 3 easy tips!

#1 Use fabric conditioners that protect the fabric

To be honest, fabric conditioner works two ways (at least). First is that it makes your clothes soft to the touch. The other is that it should protect your fabric --- “condition it” if you will. So if you happen to pass by a fabric conditioner that does the trick. Buy it and use as directed.

#2 Read the instructions tag that comes with it

Sometimes items have tags that tell you how to take care of your clothes. They are there for a reason and follow it. For those that doesn’t have it, research the material that it consists of and search the internet on how to take care of it.

#3 If you can skip the ironing, skip it. Same goes with bleach too!

If the fabric conditioner did its' work well, at times, you no longer have to iron it. Not only will this save you money from energy bills but also, the fabric of your clothing will also be spared the extra heat that may “cook the fibers” causing unnecessary damage to it.

Same rule goes with bleach. But if you really have to, then please read the instructions carefully or use sparingly.

PLUS SIZE MODEL: ERZULLIE ICON KHRIS GUARIN ON WHAT MODELING IS

Erzullie Icon and Plus Size Model, Khris Guarin, was one of our earlier Icons. This plus size model, aside from her day job, has already appeared in various international plus size blogs as well as being pursued to be handled by one of the top modeling agencies here in the country. Her last project with us was this interview, “ReKovery: How Khris Guarin Survived A Health Crisis”.

In that interview, we asked her what happened since the successful 2nd anniversary campaign. She starts by recalling what she did in the campaign itself, “I did not model the clothes. I represented… the brand --- fierce + confidence.”

This is actually a great advice for the aspiring plus size models out there. Ultimately, modeling is the internalization of an emotion and bringing it out in a single moment to be held for the photographer to capture.

PLUS SIZE OPINION: THE FASHION EFFECT (CAN CHANGING CLOTHES CHANGE YOUR DAY?)

Whenever I feel that I want to start fresh --- I tend to shed off the current clothes that I have right now and put on a new one. I know that it’s a weird practice, but for me, I think it helps my mindset.

It’s like a symbolism of shedding the old energies that I no longer want and placing it on a box (dirty laundry basket) that will be recycled (washed, dried and ironed) and made new again. In the meantime, I need to choose, reboot myself to feel good. So I go to my closet, look at the plethora of choices and in my mind, I’m thinking --- how do I want to feel today?

Vibrant colors for a dose of happiness and positivity. Dark colors for some grounding. Heavy fabrics for some security. Light ones for some fun and flirt. Constructive for a powerful woman effect, while loose for a relax-and-breathe theme.

It just occurred to me how fashion has become symbols of my feelings and tools as to direct my mindset. As trivial as that may sound, it does happen every day, even to those who are not-fashion conscious. We all choose what wear from what we feel that we value inside. Even for those who dress for function, that’s the point, you feel that function is a great value that is why you dress that way.

So can fashion change someone’s day? Absolutely. To change clothes is more than just changing fabrics that is on your skin, it is also a conscious choice of choosing what your really value inside and bringing it out for the world to see. From that, your choices and view of life will change and of course, how you feel about the rest of your day. And if you can change how you feel about something into something you value, then you just made one more step of making it better.

“This Room” is almost done. By Monday, we will be moving in the essentials and then settle the vibe of the place. It has been a wonderful challenge for me, as this dream is realized.
